Just started my CPAP trial and struggling.

RE: Just started my CPAP trial and struggling.
It's amazing how the human body can adapt to things like CPAP therapy. I remember when I thought the pressure in my face was overwhelming. Now it feels perfectly natural and I can't imagine trying to sleep without it.

ResMed sells a gel pad which I find works great for fixing leaks under my eyes and across the bridge of my nose. It is called a Gecko Nasal Pad and comes in two sizes.

The gel pad also helps prevent sores on the bidge of the nose. In fact, Supplier #2 (in Supplier List) calls them "ResMed Gel Reusable Nose Guards."

The best mask for me has been the full face ResMed Mirage Quattro, plus the gel pad.

Take care. Persevere and you will find a mask which works well for you.

It's been three nights since I went back to the specialist. She changed the settings a little so that the pressure is not so high. She said it was leakage that was the problem. She gave me two different types of nose mask to try. One cut into my nose and I couldn't wear it for more than half an hour. I'm still having apneas with the mask and one night I bit my tongue quite hard. Last night though I was actually able to sleep for long enough that I started dreaming before I had to take it off so that was a break through.

That is great. Congratulations! Progress can be very gradual, with ups and downs, but perseverence eventually wins out, big time. Take care.

This board is so critical to us knowing we are not going nuts trying to adapt to this new world.

Tonight I put dark sheets over my bedroom blinds. I've also gotten new relaxation tapes, set up a fan in my room, and am pushing it to stay up as late as I can. We are often our own worst enemies in this because we psych ourselves into thinking we can't sleep.

This was the first weekend in I don't know how long when I actually was not consumed with noticing what time it was and how far away I was to the time I should go to bed. I actually got some living done.

We had a few second long power blip this am. Of course, that wakes me up (always did, even before CPAP - we have a humidifier in the room) and I have to get awake enough to reset the alarm clock... Of course, I didn't take off my mask, so it autostarted again... but by the time I got the clock set... I couldn't tell if the CPAP machine was on or not. Actually turned it *off* and then went "Oh... there was pressure there..."

RE: Just started my CPAP trial and struggling.
HI,

I have had CPAp machines over the past 6 years. I had some difficulty in the beginning with masks, so I switched to the nasal cannula/pillow style, which is much harder to leak. Then I had problems of cours adjsuting to the air blowing into me, so my doctor prescribed some xanax to help me overcome the anxiety of the pressure when I first started using my machine.

Now I have progressed and I really liek the sleep weaver mask, fits much better for me for a mask and hardly feels like it is on me. It all takes time. My mother had started using CPAP therapy about three years ago, and she had constant issues with leakage and had tried ALOT of differnt masks/cannulas. Finally she got used to it and she also realy like using the sleep weaver mask (of course hers is Pink, not tan like mine Wink . It will take time, but once you get used to it and find the right mask, you will get some real sleep. I had so much sleep when I finally adjusted to my machine and masks (3-4 months) that they did a daytime sleep study becasue I was getting sooo much REM sleep (they thought I might have Narcolepsy). It turned out my body was just trying to catch up on REM sleep it had been missing for so many years. Now I can;t imagine not using my CPAP for sleep at all!!! I even bought a travel machine, which I use on overseas flights often.

So good luck, but you will get there. Just be patient and understand your body has to get used to it as well as finding the right mask fit and comfort!

I have a 9-volt battery in my alarm clock that keeps it alive when the grid goes down. I have a UPS on my CPAP machine so it keeps going, too. I don't have a humidifier, but I do have a room filter that makes white noise. I lose that and the ceiling fan when the grid fails, and sometimes the lack of white noise and the loss of the fan wakes me up, but most of the time I sleep right through it.

I actually took to this quickly but everyone is different. I was in denial for quite a while after my diagnosis july 24th. Well technically i have been in denial for YEARS because i refused to get a sleep study because i knew what they would tell me and what the suggestion would be. I am still in my beginning phases so i have my good and bad days... i think key is finding the right machine/mask fit for you to be comfortable.
