Leftover water in humidair

In the USA we can buy these one-gallon jugs for about $1. But it's not the expensive medical grade distilled water found in most European countries. It's actually just de-ionized water.

The danger of not rinsing out the water chamber and filling it with fresh water is bacteria growth.

The inconvenience of tap water is that if it's hard it will leave mineral deposits that have to be removed with vinegar or the like.

We have a Wiki article on it here.

Even distilled water provides a suitable environment for airborne bacteria and other contaminate to eventually colonize.  These common bacteria and non pathogenic and are mostly an aesthetic problem, but we would rather avoid that.  I have used tap water since starting CPAP many years ago.  It has never been a problem and dumping the water costs nothing.  For anyone concerned about minerals or other contaminates in humidifier water, I recommend getting a Zero Water Pitcher.  These provide reduction of suspended solids and organic contaminates.  This Spring our well water at the cottage was simply gross, and I was able to get clean clear water less than 2 ppm TSS using the Zero Water, which after initial investment just uses a new filter every 6 months or so.  Check this out...yuck!

Oh yeah man ! I remember drinking water near the river where I grew up... a kid I grew up with lived like less than 50 yards from the river and when he offered me iced tea..... I had to hold my nose to drink it. GASP ! can't IMAGINE what was in that water. People boating and who knows what else is in that water ! But yeah well water is hard, iron content wise anyway.

Washing out with a mild detergent and then a good rinse in clean water removes any trace of vinegar odour (Morning Fresh dishwashing concentrate is my normal go to for most cleaning).

I have given up using the humidifier at all these days, but still periodically wash it and the hose out with the dishwashing detergent.

I've been using distilled white vinegar now for quite some time to rid my water reservoir of mineral build-up. I let it soak for 30 min. or so, swish it around good, and then rinse with tap water. No residual smell at all.
