I just read the description - it sounds horrible. What do you do when you're not staring at the wall? Are you allowed to work / read / watch TV?

RE: Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT)
It's an 8 hour time period....40 min you sit on a bed in reduced lighting just staring and trying to stay awake. Then you have an hour and twenty min. I watched TV in the room. You repeat this 4 times. I was wired similar to the sleep tests. I'm a School Bus Driver. It proves for the DOT your ability to stay awake. I have a yearly physical for my employment coming up next week and wanted to be proactive in my documentation to the school district and the New York State DOT. Eat-popcorn

SuperSleeper, if you are found positive for this test, what does it mean you have?
I think I could do what I am supposed to do for this test, so what does that mean please?

RE: Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT)
I'd do great on this considering I slept for like an hour and a half at both my sleep studies, and that was in a dark room with no TV or anything.

Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT)

What is Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT)?
Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) is a daytime procedure in which the ability to remain awake is assessed. It is the measurement of the length of time for which an individual can remain awake in a dark, quiet room. It provides an indication of the degree of daytime alertness.

Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) is a way to evaluate the ability to stay awake during the day. An overnight diagnostic sleep study called a polysomnogram (PSG) is usually required the night prior to the daytime MWT. After the PSG is complete, the MWT testing is spread over the following day. There are 4 tests spaced 2 hours apart

Why is this test done?
This test is done to assess excessive daytime sleepiness. It is used to evaluate the effectiveness of treatments for daytime sleepiness. Pre and post treatment values show the degree of improvement following treatments. It is also used to help judge whether a patient is too tired to drive or perform other daily tasks.

What precautions need to be taken prior to the test?
The test is conducted at a sleep laboratory with facilities to monitor different parameters.
In order to make the study useful, the patient must allow at least 8 hours in bed for sleep on a regular schedule for the 2 weeks preceding this test.
He should adhere to the instructions given by the sleep physician concerning medication that should be discontinued prior to this study.
Bring labeled medications on the scheduled day to discuss whether they should be taken prior to sleep testing.
Prior to arrival, please eat a normal breakfast.
Hair should be clean without hairspary or gel in order to minimize interference with data recording.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
Bring reading material or something to keep you occupied during the two-hour intervals between testing periods.

How is the test performed?
MWT takes about 8 hours to complete and consists of four trials given two hours apart beginning 1.5-3 hours after awakening.
After being asked to stay awake, electrodes are attached on the head and chest to record the brain wave activity, eye
movements, muscle contractions, and heart activity to accurately detect if the patient is falling asleep.
proper functioning.
The patient is then placed in bed with the head end of bed raised so that the patient is sitting up during the trial.
The room is then made quiet and dim with only a night light beside the bed.
The trial is ended after 40 minutes if the patient does not fall asleep. If he falls asleep, he will be awakened after sleeping
for about 90 seconds

The information collected during the study is reviewed and analyzed by a sleep specialist.

What is a normal result?
A total of 97.5% of normal sleepers stay awake for an average of eight minutes or more during the MWT. Falling asleep in an average of less than eight minutes during the test would be considered abnormal. Results show that from 40% to 59% of people with normal sleep stay awake for the entire 40 minutes of all four trials.

When do we get the results?
It usually takes about two weeks to get the results of a MWT. A technologist will first chart out the wake-sleep cycles. The results will be sent to the doctor. The MWT is not a test that you can fail. The doctor will review the study to assess your level of daytime sleepiness.
