RE: Major dental work and mask
Thought I would give an update.
I had 15 teeth pulled on June 7th. I was fitted for a temporary set of dentures that day. A full upper and a lower partial. I was to wear them for a full 24hrs, rinse, then wear for the rest of the day. After that, it was to be the usual pattern of wear during the day and out at night. Long story short, after the 24hrs thing, I had to go back to the dentist. I have a dry socket on a back molar and ulcers on many upper gums. I was unable to wear the dentures and still cannot due to the ulcers and bits of bone forming and coming through (called bone sequestra).
Anyway, I wore the Simplus FFM because the first 3 nights. But it was pressing against several ulcers so I had to switch to the Nuance and a chin strap. The problem, though, was finding a way to keep my lower jaw from pressing the remaining teeth into my tender upper gums. It has not been easy. And certainly not fun. I tried it without the chin strap but my mouth opened and I was snoring like mad.
As usual, my AHI changed when switching masks. My CA events skyrocketed for several nights but that could also be due to the large amounts of pain medication I was on. I typically don't take them that many nights in a row. I was napping a LOT for about a week until the fever was gone and I was able to lower the pain meds. I really could have benefited from the Simplus during this. I hope to switch back to it soon as the ulcers in the front have healed finally.

RE: Major dental work and mask
So my thoughts on masks and dental work:
I don't think a full face mask would work well if the dental work is on upper front teeth. I was surprised at how much the seal pressed against those tender gums. And the dentist wondered if the mask attributed to the worst ulcer on the front left (I don't think it did) by pressing against the dentures that first night.
I think the fact you are using a CPAP mask should be brought up to the dentist prior to such extreme dental work. They never asked and I never mentioned it. I didn't think it would matter but now I believe it does. Perhaps there was something we could have done. Maybe not. Perhaps an oral surgeon would be better able to handle it but certainly not a cheap denture place that deals with patients on an assembly line.

Tongue Suck Technique for prevention of mouth breathing:
- Place your tongue behind your front teeth on the roof of your mouth
- let your tongue fill the space between the upper molars
- gently suck to form a light vacuum
Practising during the day can help you to keep it at night

RE: Major dental work and mask
Paula,
I am totally confused. The lower cushion of a full face mask presses on your upper jaw???? Did you fit your mask that way on purpose? I thought that the lower cushion was supposed to contact the lower jaw in the indentation between your chin and your lower lip.
I do commiserate with you. What you have gone through is not something I would wish on anyone. Take care of yourself and I hope you heal up soon.
Best Regards,
PaytonA

I had to lie down after reading that.
I hope you start to heal and feel better soon. Dental pain is awful!
RE: Major dental work and mask
You have my utmost sympathies Paula! I hate going to the dentist just for a checkup. I'm sure there are nail marks under where I very tightly grip the chair armrests. I am a big fan of Valium. 26 years ago when I had my emergency C-section, they pumped me full of valium and I'm pretty sure had they asked me if they could cut off my head I would have gladly agreed I was so high!
About the mask, I am FAR from the most experienced (understatement), but I was wondering about one of those full face masks that go over your eyes even? Maybe I'm too late in seeing this post anyway.
Take care and hoping you heal well and things work out for the best!

No, I wear the mask correctly. The cushion pressed on my front gums, just to the sides of my nose.

Good advice for those contemplating dental work. Thanks for reminding us all of this, Paula - sorry you have to go through the pain.
