Microsoft discounts cost of Windows 8 by 70%
This week Microsoft announced that it's discounting the cost of Windows 8 by 70%, for low-end devices.

The definition of a low-end device?

Anything running Windows 8. Dielaughing

Well, it's not even the current OS. That would be 8.1

I would rather have them give us office back instead of making us pay for it separately. It didn't take me long to figure out how to get around in win 8, I still don't like it. I liked win 7 a lot and wish I still had it

RE: Microsoft discounts cost of Windows 8 by 70%
My Dad just got a new computer and I took the pre-installed Windows 8 system off and installed Ubuntu Linux 12.04 LTS. The word on the street is that Microsoft might even be giving a low-end version of Windows 8 free of charge later this year. Many folks are saying that even at that price point, they would still not use Windows 8. There's almost a complete disgust and hatred for Windows 8 out there.

Since all my dad does is email and browse the web using Firefox, Linux works well, and no great risk of a virus either, and very stable - and nearly all the software he'll ever need is completely free.

He likes it - and he's in his 80's. Yeah, Ubuntu Linux is easy enough for him to use (once it was installed). I set it up with the classic gnome deskop and used Ubuntu Tweak to make it look more like Windows with the panel on the bottom and the min/max/close buttons on the upper right of a window. The default Unity interface is confusing, IMHO, which is why I switched back to the classic gnome GUI. It's solid, it works and he likes it. And zero cost for the OS and most all software.

Some folks say Linux will never be as popular as Windows. For the interim, that's true, but only because Windows is pre-installed on just about every new PC out there. It's the installation and configuration of Linux that get some folks upset and frustrated. However, if Linux were distributed in the exact same manner as Windows (pre-installed and pre-configured on brand new PCs), and if users had a true choice on whether to purchase a new PC with Windows vs. Linux, I think Linux would win that battle. But since Linux is hardly ever pre-installed on a new computer, the deck is stacked in Micro$oft's corner.

But, if you get Windoze 8 you can always upgrade it to 8.1 for free. Me, my main system runs Mavericks 10.9.2.

If you are stuck with Windows 8, Google the following: windows 8 user interface windows 7
You don't have to be stuck with that ..um...stuff!

As always, YMMV! You do not have to agree or disagree, I am not a professional so my mental meanderings are simply recollections of things from my own life.

Here is a newspaper article about a "typical" user named Bill Gates and his experience with installing Windows 8.1 Too-funny

Gates spends entire first day back in the office trying to install Windows 8.1

Ha ha! That's too funny.

At work the techs are upgrading every machine on campus that runs Win XP to Win 7.

Win 8 is out of the question.

At home my newest computer is this laptop that I bought a year and a half ago at a discount because it runs Win 7.

I've tried Linux but I'm just too lazy to climb the learning curve. I prefer to spend my time using the computer, not learning how to use it. I agree that if a new computer came with Linux I'd be more inclined to learn how to use it. Bill Gates will fight that by giving away Windows if he has to. That's what Netscape forced him to do with Internet Explorer. Well, that and some judicial intervention.

If we have to tolerate win 8, and we do as new laptops don't have win 7 anymore, then I want office to be included in the package. We deserve to have that to ease the pain of win 8. As it stands now, if we want office, we have to pay extra for it.
