RE: Mild - Moderate Apnea - Should I buy?
Great,

Download SleepyHead software and post your results when you get them. We can at the very least help you with the questions to ask. If we suggest a change and don't say wht, just ask. That's how we all learn.
See my Sig.

Since you are not a user now, read the Mask Primer. It has a lot of info on getting a mask and fitting it and dealing with leaks.

good luck

I think attitude ha a lot to do with how well you initially adapt to using a PAP device. I was in denial--except for some occasional daytime sleepiness I didn't have some of the common apnea problems--snoring, sleep interruption, getting up to go to the bathroom at night, etc. My husband uses a CPAP and I sure didn't sound like him before he got his machine! Even though I fell asleep while driving and rear-ending a car stopped at a crosswalk I had a hard time accepting the diagnosis. I had an overnight sleep test and had an AHI of 30.8--just into the severe category. It took me over a month to adjust, but things got easier when I changed my attitude and was thankful that the accident (no one was injured) was a wake-up call to prevent something tragic in the future. I also did some studying up on apnea and came to realize how dangerous it is to one's overall health. My results continued to get better over the next year and now my average (30 day) AHI is under one. My husband, who had a VA home sleep test, read the directions when his equipment arrived via UPS, adjusted his own mask, and slept through the night from day one. Be positive and take the good information from members here on the forum, and you can do it!

RE: Mild - Moderate Apnea - Should I buy?
Hi and welcome--

I'm a newbie here, but will say you've made a sound choice in caring for your health.  The thing that frightens me most about having sleep apnea (besides the cessation of breathing all through the night, every night), are the health ramifications from having untreated apnea.  I believe there is a thread in her somewhere that describes how the body/systems are affected, or just Google it.

I've only been on therapy for 19 nights and it's making a difference already. It takes a little getting used to, but in the name of being an oxygenated and energetic human, and not harming my heart and brain, I'm extremely committed.  It's also worth mentioning that after having suffered with anxiety/depression for many years, I can feel it diminishing with each day-----> hallelujah!

Glad you're here.  You'll find some extremely well-versed, knowledgeable individuals here to help.

Thanks! I've actually been complaining about sleep issues for years, not to mention daytime exhaustion. I hope the theropy works out, I've been wanting to try a xPAP for years now but never had a scrip.

I am similar to you. My sleep dr didn't even want to treat me... but I insisted (because I was so darn tired).  It radically changed my life, from day 1!  I would encourage you to get one.

Also, if you are buying in USA, I would suggest checking out the listings on Amazon. Much cheaper than even online Cpap equipment vendors.

RE: Mild - Moderate Apnea - Should I buy?
Quick question for you guys. I'm going to be receiving the new machine (Airsense 10 Autoset APAP) on Wednesday or Thursday.

my APAP range was prescribed as 5-15 by my doctor. Should I go straight into that, or should I lower the max pressure a bit while I'm getting used to the new machine?
Should I set the EPR to a Max of 3cm, or something lower?

No need to change the max for now. Since it's an auto, it'll only go as high as it needs to go to resolve the breathing disturbances. In my opinion, the minimum is the one to consider adjusting. But if your dr recommended that range, may as well start with that.

RE: Mild - Moderate Apnea - Should I buy?
Hi and welcome! I'm very new as well, only been on my machine 8 days. I was diagnosed with an in lab study in 2012 and refused CPAP at the time. I went out of town in Feb and had to sleep in the same hotel room as my sister and our veterinarian friend who basically went off on me the next morning and made me promise to go back to the sleep Dr. I did, have different insurance now, they would only pay for a home test. AHI of 18.5 total or however it works, much worse on my back than my side. I caved and got the machine.

Is it weird to sleep with? Yep. Do strange things happen like water in the hose that cause bizarre noises? Yep. Do I feel like I'm bringing sexy back? Umm nope. All that being said, I never ever realized how tired I've been all my life. I'm 50 years old and have never felt more awake. The weirdness has been so completely worth it. I figured out how to download and use sleepyhead and my AHI hasn't been over 2.0 since I started. This forum has been a wonderful source of help and support.

Glad you're getting the machine. I really like mine. I wish you a quick and easy adjustment to this new way of sleeping and many happy awake days!
