Neti Pot - Not just for those annoying colds

jeffy1958 Wrote:Ah yes... I had an appointment with Dr. Don (my P.C.P.) whom I've known for over 10 years. We got to discussing the advantages of the nasal rinse. He is of the opinion, not being an ENT specialist, no more than 4-5 times a day. His reasoning is the saline could dry out your nasal passages and cavities to the point of irritation. Othern than that there is no harm rinsing your nose out with a mild saline solution. Then I brought up the individual that adds "corn syrup" and those that add "honey" to their rinse. I won't go into the conversation that took place after that.

However;

Regardless of how it makes you feel, takes the sting away, I would strongly suggest you stop that practice and find a different recipe, a more legitimate one from the inter-net!!! Or you could try this one given to be by Dr. Beth (E.N.T.) whom I've know just about all my life. We, grew up in the same small town went to school and graduated together and now she is my ENT specialist. I actually talked to her on the phone last night, we have a rerunion comming up. (35 if you must know). I have her private number, a privilege of growing up together. She is in agreement with Dr. Don and the non-use of anything but salt and baking soda.

1 gal. water
4 tsp. canning salt
1 tsp. baking soda.
NO KARO SYRUP???

You could break it down to a quart using the following:
1 tsp. canning salt
1/4 tsp. baking soda

Karo syrup is used in a nasal wash solution to match your body's natural sugar concentration. The addition of a sugar to the solution helps prevent your nasal passages from becoming dried out. Adding 1 Tbsp. of Karo syrup to your nasal wash will do the trick.

Spring is allergy season for a lot of people, therefor the renewal of this thread may be quite helpful to some folks.

I just finished using my daily morning rinse, using a Neil Med squeeze bottle. I love the feeling I get from "opening up" my nose.
Yesterday is history; Tomorrow is a mystery; Today is a gift; Thats why its called "The Present".

I pretty much use mine every night when needed....which is almost every night. If I'm sick, I might use it a few times during the day as well.

The only real problem...is that there's fields north of where I live, and they use manure....and it can be pretty ripe walking out the front door, worse if I've just rinsed my nasal passages Smile

At first I worried about doing it too much...but sleep doc told me to get back to doing it....

When it was first suggested to me...I wasn't interested in it...but one particularly stuffed up night, I gave it a shot. At first nothing...but few minutes later....woosh, I'm clear.

I use the squeeze bottles.

I've been wondering about the pulse jets....or the sinu-gator? that Neil med came out with a while back.

I use the squeeze bottles as well although, knock on wood, I've not had to use it in a while. Allergy season is just starting here so I probably just condemned myself! (the season is not starting off well, anyway. I have poison ivy on my face and eye)

I highly recommend it to anyone who can tolerate the water up the nose thing. My brother cringes and pales every time I mention it (which I do often just to watch his face).

A pulse jet? That doesn't sound good. Now I'm cringing.

Thanks for the info, Jeffy!

I read that it is better to use distiller water because two users in recent years got a brain eating amoeba infection. I know it is rare but I think I would use distilled.

No, it hit the news because she got it from tap water. I'll try and find the article.
