Why are LEAKS a problem?

Why are LEAKS a problem?
I see a lot of references to leaks in various posts. However, I wonder why leaks are important, especially is they only last a few seconds for instance when you turn over, re-position the mask, or scratch your nose. I could understand how a continuous leak might impact readings but seems to me the occasional leak would be OK.

Thanks

RE: Why are LEAKS a problem?
Yep, you're quite right. Transient leaks such as you describe are no real problem. Prolonged large leaks can adversely affect the ability of the machine to diagnose events and maintain the required pressure. Smaller leaks into the eyes can be intensely irritating, and noisy transient leaks ("face farts") can wake you or your partner.
