Newbie, so forgive me

RE: Newbie, so forgive me

Thanks everyone, I will respond more later, as I have to go a few places. My settings for therapy were 4 to 9. I have a Phillips Remstar System One with humidifier. I put my sdcard on my computerit message popped up stating sd card needs formatted. I'll try another computer later.

Sounds like a conspiracy theory, even I am having a hard time believing this. Lol. I go specialists for my ears. I've had prior surgeries, cysts, benign tumours removed. If I sleep in a room with a slight chill, my sinuses swell and sinusitis rages. I have chronic drainage. Full battery of allergy tests, even blood related, no issues. I do have a very high positive ANA but, not signs of Lupus.

I get green globs the size of a dime slice through my eardum and have to be pulled out by tweezer or qtip. I have a few pictures in which I saved for a second Dr opinion.

Unfortunately, I never felt any better when I used my Cpap. I'm a very light sleeper and it always wakes my up. Mostly because of headache, sinus pressure and fighting with trying to get mask on after a bathroom break. One I have sinus attack I'm pretty much done for a few hours.

My Sleep Dr is really cool, he said he was surprised at my numbers for my study. He said there was no improvement with my sleep and it was actually a bit worse.

Ear drops, antibiotics, tubes, ct scan, scoping, blood work all were used.

In all honesty, Cpap hasn't helped me, and seems to cause havoc to what's going on autoimmune wise. Drilling into my head was the last dagger for Cpap for me.

I am looking into different sleep positions, mouth pieces or possibly more surgery. I am looking into giving my Cpap away, I have to call insurance company and sign a prescription release.

Trust me, I am very happy it works for many of you, and God Bless you. Hopefully I find mine.

DO NOT!!! give away your CPAP. At least not for a long time and you solve your problems. You can always give it away later.

An Oracle mask will solve the ear pressure problems if you use it without nose plugs.

"Philips REMstar System One with humidifier" is not helpful. We need the number on the bottom as mentioned in my previous post. Take the water tank out of the machine first.

Do not format the SD card.

Get the free OSCAR CPAP software here.

I've tried Savella, Nuvigil, Provigil, Cymbalta (only a few) prescribed for Fibromygia and some for Sleep Apnea. Ultram helps for pain, and Provigil helps a bit. I haven't had one day I felt better using a Cpap. I have masks here and have had sleep people come to my home. They make adjustments, and then give me a different mask.

Maybe If I felt better, I would might have kept using it, plus, the correlation with Cpap and Mastoiditis is for me, alarming. Some people with bad sinus issues are more at risk, and I really can't see myself using Cpap again. I'm hoping the Mytap appliance helps, it's worth a try.

I've sort of adjusted by having cat naps, lots of caffeine.

Is it P150 or 150P? Double check. Post a picture of the label if you have any question.

If it's a 150, you got screwed.

The 150 model only records when you turn it on and off. There is no other data that's useful for your therapy. There's no point in trying to use the software to read the card because there's no useful data.

For the same price with insurance, you could have gotten a 460 Pro model or a 560 Auto model.
The 460 or 560 models determine how well your CPAP is working, and every breath you take during the night. They'll tell if you're getting leaks. These models are like getting a mini sleep test every night.

A 150 model is like treating diabetes without bothering to monitor blood sugar. It might work, but you have no objective data on how it's working.

If you had a 460 model or better, you or your doctor can check your data by reading the SD card and checking to see if you're having apnea. You could lower the pressure and see if you still control your apnea.

An Auto model such as the 560 would allow your pressure to be lower at most times and only raise the pressure as needed. This could help your ears.

You might be able to get a better machine through insurance if your doctor changes the prescription to an APAP machine. An APAP machine will probably help with the ears because it will allow you to use a lower pressure most of the time and will only raise pressure as needed. The biggest advantage of an APAP is that all the common APAP models do record full data.

You might see if you can convince your doctor to prescribe an APAP before you burn your bridges with him. Once you get a good machine, you probably need to take charge of your own therapy. The medical mafia will tell you you can't, but you can change your own pressure settings, and you can read your own CPAP data and monitor your therapy.

It may be an uphill struggle. Many doctors don't understand APAP machines and believe the lie they don't work well. The DME's make a higher profit on manual CPAP, so they tend to try to avoid auto machines. APAP machines are always a better choice than a manual CPAP because all APAPs can be set to work in manual CPAP mode if you can't make APAP work.

If it's midnight and a DME tells you it's dark outside, go and check for yourself.

If you do try to get a better machine, read the hints in the Useful Links in my signature line at the bottom of this post to avoid getting screwed and getting the right machine.

This thread shows some of the kinds of data you can get if you have a 460 or higher model CPAP. Don't let the length of that thread scare you. There's a lot of data you can see, but you don't have to go too deep into the program to get useful data. The complicated stuff is there if you want to dig deeper, but you don't have to learn it all.

BTW, it's doubly surprising if you actually have a 150 model. The 150 model was replaced with the 160 model a few years ago, so they've given you a really old machine, probably a returned rental machine.

RE: Newbie, so forgive me
Well, around here we just do what we do. Sometimes folks come along that do not, can not, will not use therapy for their apnea. I understand this in your case with your surrounding issues, but it is still unfortunate. I think with proper equipment and training you may have succeeded with therapy and therefor would have done something incredibly positive for your future health.

But sometimes we strike out.

Best of luck to you. We'll be here if you want to try it again.

He got screwed by the medical mafia with a bad CPAP machine and poor followup.

I wish him well, but the oral appliance will probably be round two of not getting his apnea treated.

One really bad thing about an oral appliance is that there's no feedback on whether it's working like there is with a proper modern CPAP.

So, I like to search these things out, and I could not find any studies about this connection. I wonder if that is because the "correlation with Cpap and Mastoiditis" is well understood or hides behind the side-effects listing. The only study I did find was regarding use of humidifiers that were cleaned versus ones that were not routinely cleaned. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11694810

Any other studies you can point to would be great. Thanks.

Defensive much?
Dr. Sapan J. Pandya
First search on Google.

"Yes, Mastoiditis can occur because of Continous Postive Airway Pressure (CPAP).

When the mastoid cells become infected or inflamed, often as a result of an unresolved middle ear infection (otitis media), mastoiditis can develop. In acute mastoiditis, infection may spread outside of the mastoid bone and cause serious health complications. In some cases, because of repeated insults the infection may become chronic.

It has been found that throat infections (Pharyngitis) and sinus infections (sinusitis) are more common in CPAP users. When air blows under pressure it can spread the infection to middle ear through Eustachian tube.

Hearing loss can be reversible if it is labyrinthitis (infection of labyrinthine). But severe damage to labyrinth can cause irreversible hearing loss."

Think about it, when you have an bad sinus infection, your Dr. doesn't recommend a valsalva maneuver. The reason, moving, and spreading the infection and possibly deeper into your head. I guess maybe I made the mistake in coming here, and having a bad experience with a Cpap in a pro Cpap community. Thanks, for your time, and I hope the best for you all. Talke care.

You may not get to read this but either way I'm sad to see you go.

The fact is that your experience is beyond that of many (or even most) people here. You may have seen the strong opinions of some as confronting and that is sad.

Preconceived positions and openness to alternate opinion is a two way thing however, and I would like to have learned and understood more from your experience and knowledge. Had you continued to engage you too may have learned more.

Best wishes to you

David
