[News] COVID-19

RE: COVID-19
I wonder what the 'actual numbers' are.  For me, this would seem to warrant an abundance of caution.  There is so much hype, disparity in reported CFR, reliance on the veridical information promulgated by governments of any description, variations in opinion from experts...

I think there's a fine line between cynicism and vigilance. I hate being hoodwinked, but I don't want to run into a low-hanging branch with my chin up either.

The Czech republic is now requiring everyone to wear a mask when they go outside. Austria is requiring masks in grocery stores and Germany is considering it. Will be interesting to see if there is any change in their numbers.

The saddest commentary is the lack of protective equipment for health care workers.

I could never imagine any retired doctor or nurse signing up for a suicide mission after years of service. That is pretty much the case if any of them are in the vulnerable category and return with no or inadequate PPE.

This is a link to an article from the NYT that was posted on the MSNBC news page that speaks to one type of tension between health care providers and government/medical board policies. (I don't see anything in my view that would place this link out of bounds. If I am mistaken, mods, kindly expunge it without prejudice).

I watched a video with a masked physician in China yesterday being interviewed by a westerner who lives and works, I think in Taiwan.  The physician gave a candid assessment of the current situation, and said that the hardest working people, bar none, are the nurses.  In China, family members and friends do the non-medical care for patients hospitalized.  Now, as you might anticipate, the nurses must do everything, and they can only manage endless days of 4 hour shifts before they are exhausted treating the large numbers of infected people.

He stated that he was part of the second wave of 10K health care providers trucked or flown into Wuhan in late January to deal with the epidemic.  There were three waves in total.  Between that stark account, and the miracle of the ten-day hospital, I'm inclined to think that the Chinese dealt with this expeditiously and responsibly, if still not leaking the true numbers.  It seems the USA will be judged to have been slow to deal with this virus when the final sums are reported.  I hope it won't be an everlasting discredit.

RE: COVID-19
Here is an article from our local government funded news.

It is interesting in that there seems to be some change in attitude towards citizens wearing masks in public.

My husband and I discussed whether he should wear a mask while grocery shopping. We both felt that since we are seniors and the health system will soon be overwhelmed, we should do whatever we think is best. Ultimately, it will be us who pays the price. So he wears a mask while shopping.

In a monumental example of government stupidity and propaganda, I saw one story that said that masks should not be used by individuals not showing symptoms, but they should be used by first responders.

It seems logical to assume that N95 masks are somewhat effective against infected or potentially infected individuals -- so why wouldn't the same protections apply to high-risk individuals as they would to first responders? Especially since most first responders are younger and in good shape -- unlike those who are senior citizens or have underlying medical conditions.

I would speculate that this is the government's way of reducing the hoarding of masks to reduce the temporary shortage. A dangerous exercise for many people.

RE: COVID-19
Being a high risk individual I understand your feelings but agree with policies to make as many masks as possible to first responders and medical personnel. They may be at less risk of dying but they can still get sick enough to take them out of service. If too many are taken out of the workforce it will be worse for everyone.

RE: COVID-19
What I fail to realize is why is everyone so concerned about complaining that the federal government needs to provide N95 masks and other needed equipment?  Since when did the federal government become a DME?

Since when did it become the responsibility of the federal government to procure, pay for and distribute medical equipment?  Have we now moved into a communist society where the answer to everything is bigger, more expensive and intrusive government?  Should the federal government now mandate when, where and for what costs N95 masks should be manufactured?  Do we have to crawl to Uncle Sam and beg for things that we need now?  Whatever happened to taking responsibility for ourselves, as households, as towns & cities, as counties and individual states?

What about states doing their jobs to ensure public safety?  Do they have any responsibilty in all this, or do they just complain that "Big Daddy Federal Government" isn't giving them enough "stuff"?

What about counties and local municipalities doing their part to ensure and pay for public safety?

What about local hospitals and medical facilities doing their part to ensure public safety?

Why is it always the federal government's responsibility to provide supplies and equipment in times like this?

The truth is that many states and local governments were given huge amounts of money to purchase medical supplies in the past (using federal funds), including N95 masks and other PPE, but instead of stockpiling them, they spent the money on other things they deemed "more important" at the time.  So their misappropriation of funds is now somehow the federal government's fault??

I don't trust the government any more than the next guy.  But neither do I think we should be screaming for the federal government to give us everything we need... because they WILL DO IT, but we will end up a less free society as a result.

I personally think that Trump and team are doing the best they can with what they've got, and I'm not a huge supporter of Trump overall.  I don't agree with the vacillating junk about "don't buy all the masks" and then later "yes, you should use a mask".   But having said that, people who keep screaming "GOVERNMENT PLEASE SAVE US!"  will eventually get "free stuff" from the government and will be left with a new system that is more akin to communist China than it is to a constitutional republic.

And if this offends all the socialist types, oh well. I'm an American who doesn't kowtow to "socialist ideals".
