Interesting. Thanks.

Have you opened one up?  Got pictures?

Are you talking DS1, DS2, PRS1...?

From various snippets of information on previous levels of Respironics machines, I had come to the conclusion that they were all the same basic hardware from brick to BiPAP Auto.   I guess ASV is a bit of a different animal.  Also, I didn't have access to things like parts lists and disassembled machines for all the different models.

There's some possibility of that, but even if there is some outgassing from breakdown of the foam, it's still something that should decrease over time.

If chemical W in the foam breaks down to release chemical Y (the dangerous one), there's only a certain amount of chemical W in the foam to start with, and it will be slowly depleted over time once it starts breaking down.

There's only so many grams of foam in the machine.  Of that, there's only going to be so many grams of the chemicals that are precursors of the chemicals of concern.

Don't forget that whatever is outgassed is mixed with 20 liters of air per minute.  Over the course of a night, that's a really small concentration of a night's worth of chemicals.

The DS1 ASV blower is labeled ASV and completely fills the air chamber in height and width. The Auto CPAP blower has space above and around it. It is capable of rapid pressure changes with a rise time settable from 100 to 600 milliseconds.

My impression is that the out-gassing is probably something of a red herring. It's something that could theoretically cause issues, but probably doesn't have much effect on most people for the reason archangle mentioned. Having microscopic fragments of foam breaking off and being blown into the lungs on the other hand....

Yes, the particles are what worry me the most.  According to the report Philips released July 8th, they suggested the gassing issue may only be a problem the first few days--although they said they hadn't completely characterized the gassing problem.  The longer term issue is the breakdown which could release particles potentially containing carcinogens, although Philips did it was a potential in what they termed a "reasonable worst case scenario."

I have 2 machines in the recall a Dreamstation Apap and a System One Bipap.  I just got
a ResMed Aircurve10 Vauto so am in good shape but still want my recalled machines taken
care of.  With my System  One  I stopped using it years ago after it started being hard to turn
on sometimes stopping on it's one and flashing error messages.  What is Resperdonix doing
about the system ones are they just replacing the foam and how would they handle a unit
that besides having that bad foam was defective ?

I received my new DS2 machine 5 months after notifying Phillips - fortunately I had a backup through this time - my ole DeVillibus (great machine) - just set up my DS2 and what a MESS!!! - Respironics must be so embarrassed tp put this horrid piece of equipment out...hose outlet and button on opposite ends - so you either crimp your hose or you reach to the heavens to turn machine off in morning....it has a brick (transformer) while most machines today have eliminated that - then try to fill water chamber - you have to go through 2-3 steps just to fill - get water all over and yet a fourth step to clean....don't trust the fill line - stay under or you'll be mopping up
I will stay on for a month to satisfy my pulmonary certification to get supplies and after that return to my Devilibus...
Our primary schools are filled with kids who could design a better machine - and to think Phillips has been making CPAP machines for abt 25 years or more -

@ Mandarla

Agree on the hose. It should have been out the rear or swivel side to side. I have my DS2 'backwards' on my nightstand so the hose can go behind the beds headboard and up to an overhead hook.
Being 'backward' of course makes reading the display more difficult which last night was the case. I had gotten out of bed for a bathroom trip, came back and hooked up hose to mask, and laid down. I reached over and hit the start button....... nothing (WTH?). I pretty much can't see without my glasses and had to unhook and go over to the bureau to get my glasses so I could read the display. The display had some stupid notification about meeting enough hours for compliance (I was already Medicare compliant a year ago). The machine wouldn't start until I cleared the notification. If these nuisance 'notifications' occur frequently and they can't be disabled by me, the DME, or someone else, I may be looking for a Resmed.

Water chamber with the machine backwards is now to the 'front' which gives easier access, but is a pain compared to the ease of what the DS1 was. Have spilled water, so less than the fill line is what I do.

Otherwise the machine has worked fine for a little less than the month I've been using it.

I would love to see some detailed daily charts from a DS2 to validate that it does deliver what should be delivered.

Not sure if all of this has been published in this thread, so I'm re-posting some of the Philips-Respironics response as far as the data encryption on the new DreamStation 2 machines that Philips is using to replace the old DreamStations affected in the recall:

In a reply to one forum member:

Quote:"While I cannot speak to OSCAR as that is not our software, I can say that with the DreamStation 2 machines, we have moved away from patients being able to read the SD cards themselves (the SD cards can still be read by your doctor and medical supply company though).  So that is likely the cause of why OSCAR cannot read the data but I cannot say for certain".

Also, in a longer message to a trusted Apnea Board member comes the following response regarding an inquiry into whether Philips might provide de-encryption information to the OSCAR team:

Quote:We are obviously knowledgeable about the OSCAR software and understand that some users would like to obtain more granular data from their therapy. From the evaluations we conducted during the development of DreamMapper, we learned that providing too much information by default is confusing and raises more questions than it answers. The result of this exercise is DreamMapper where the necessary therapy data is offered with the necessary support to achieve adherence (instructional videos, motivation).

Of course we understand that for some users, and this is rather a very limited group, the information offered is too limited and they would like to obtain additional data. In this case, we recommend contacting your home care provider and/or treating physician who can print and hand over a detailed report or possibly offer it to the users through their systems (just like blood analyses and imaging protocols). However, professionals should not fail here as suggested. Therapy support/counseling is further regulated by law and should be performed by wake professionals who have a healthcare relationship with the patient.

We cannot support, promote or encourage products, accessories and actions that have not been developed or validated by the manufacturer under any circumstances. This has led in the past to very serious problems (cfr. cleaning with ozone) and caused a lot of damage to the company.

For this reason, unfortunately, we cannot accept this request.

We would like to provide an extensive training regarding DreamMapper. Including motivational interviewing that is incorporated into the app, discuss the study results where the use of DreamMapper with the benefits regarding therapy compliance for a selected patient group.  In the attachment I am already sending some additional info.

If I can be of any further assistance in this, please let me know,

With kind regards,

Mikel
