Nose Irritation

Nose Irritation
I've had my Airsense 10 autoset and Resmed P10 air pillow mask for 9 months. a few months back my nostrils were painful to touch. The best description I can think of is it felt the same as it did as a teen touching an acne pimple on the nose. I used a prescription dermatology cream and after several days it subsided. Recently, my entire nose has been red and the skin somewhat flaky. Again I treated it with the same cream and it went away.

Are these irritations common with nasal pillows? Have others experienced this.

Thanks

I don't use nasal pillows but most nasal pillow users complaint to do with irritation inside the nose, some find relief with cream used by breast feeding mothers (cannot recall the name of the product)

You could have an allergic reaction to the nasal pillows, but it's doubtful. What did your dermatologist say it was?

You can use a lanolin cream or nasal gel with the pillows. That seems to help.

When was the last time you changed the pillows? Also, they should be washed everyday.

Nasal pillows can indeed cause irritation, such as contact dermatitis, though I have been using the P10 for 4 months now and have never had major issues. Users recommend lanolin lotion, though I find it very heavy and unpleasant to place on or around my nose.

Just a couple of reminders - you should be washing the pillow itself with soap and water and air-drying everyday. Also, my insurance replaces them at a frequency of 2 per month, so I assume there is data to suggest that they only last for 2 weeks, though I have never of users keeping them for much longer. The strap could also be too tight, pushing the pillows into your nose too hard. You can somewhat loosen the headgear by spreading the two bands apart more, though it's a subtle difference.

Furthermore, I suggest considering the next size up for the pillow. If the pillows are even slightly too small they go up your nose too far, and that makes it worse. I like them to remain just under my nose, never in, so I use the large pillow even though the medium seemed to fit per the manufacturer's instructions.

Hope this helps.

Hi bperella,
WELCOME! to the forum.!
You could try some HPA Lanolin, (found in the baby isle of most stores.) Swave a “very little” bit into your nostrils.
Hang in there for more responses to your post and much success to you with your CPAP therapy.

+1 for lanolin. My nose gets raw and sore if I don't use it. Get the good lanolin. Walmart sells a watered down version that is not as good.
