Now using Oscar, a problem revealed?

RE: Now using Oscar, a problem revealed?
So the theory is, rather than apneas causing dreams as I thought, it is in fact the dreams (REM sleep) that can cause apneas? To be more specific, REM or disturbed sleep causes apneas, often in clusters. This is why we often see clusters early in the night and again just before awakening? The term for this is 'sleep/wake junk'?

So would the answer be a small increase in pressure?

The term "Sleep/Awake Junk" refers to your breathing changing from a rhythmic pattern as you sleep to a sporadic form as you awake.  This will show up as an event, even though it isn't.

As you relax to enter REM sleep your neck/throat muscles further relax causing the airway to partially collapse, thus causing an obstructed apnea.  As far as I know, apnea does not cause dreams, it inhibits them by causing your body to force to breathe. preventing relaxation and higher stages of sleep.

To the best of my memory, I hadn't dreamed for several years prior to being diagnosed with sleep apnea.  During my sleep test, I never entered REM because of my high instances of apnea.  Only after starting therapy did I start to dream again.

RE: Now using Oscar, a problem revealed?
in my experience I'm quite sure apnea causes dreams. I don't remember much in the way of dreaming before or after cpap. however, before cpap 2 frequent dreams I do remember: 1 about breathing just enough to stay underwater, and other times whatever I was dreaming about repeated and repeated and repeated in very short cycles. over the years I came to the conclusion both of these occur during the struggle to breathe. I also struggle(d) physically, thrashing around during the struggle to breathe, and the thrashing would factor into the dream in different ways.

I can't say I fully understand our sleep cycles but in my experience I'm also quite sure I tend to get more apnea in deeper sleep (I assume REM is deeper than at least a couple other stages). I see it in the flows of my longer sleep sessions.

cause and effect? I don't know. but I'm reasonably confident I had and have apnea associated dreams.
