OK to turn off heat and humifier on AirSense 10?

Zonk - I'm confused about tubes and heating. I thought heat source was in the machine but it's not - it's in the tubing? I have the tubes that came with my machine. I can believe the moisture is from my own breath but I'm not sure what to do about it. A hose cozy would affect the moisture in my nose?

I'm saying I might return it because I'm in the "rent to own" period - if I don't use it 70% of the time my insurance won't pay and I have to return it. I'm trying hard to get used to it but I'm having to take it off to get some sleep. I'm so exhausted and fiddling around with the settings and feeling like I'm suffocating and drowning is very frustrating! But I've read the success stories and I'm committed to trying hard. Last night was better but I only slept 4 hours then couldn't get back to sleep till I took the nasal pillows out and did without cpap. It's only been 3 nights so far - I'll keep trying. I wish the air blowing in my nose felt "fresher" - not smelly, not warm.
I am going through the same thing with mine. I have resorted to turning off the climate line and humidifier completely. I then use the humidifier passively by filling it with ice cold water and ice. I have also put my hose in an ice chest to cool the hose. The problem I have run into is the hose is filling with condensation. If you hang the hose up and put the CPAP on the floor this will drain the water back to the tank. I hope this will help as it is working for me now.

Using cold water however will reduce the ability to get moisture (Physics)... the warmer air (from the warmer humidifier) the more capable of the air to carry moisture.

So in a way, you are defeating the purpose of using a humidifier, unless you really don't need humidity to begin with.

However, in another posting you were complaining of having a dry tongue doing this which is either an indication of having leaks via your mouth or not enough humidity.

I've read about the ramp feature but I can't see what the result would be if I turned it off. Can you explain your suggestion more? I appreciate your help!

From the manual -
In AutoSet mode, ramp time defines the period during which the pressure gradually increases from a lower more comfortable start pressure to the minimum treatment pressure before the auto-adjusting algorithm commences.
In CPAP mode, the pressure increases from a low pressure (Start Pressure) to the prescribed treatment pressure.

Ramp Time can be set to Off, 5 to 45 minutes or Auto. When Ramp Time is set to Auto, the device will detect sleep onset and then gradually increase from the start pressure to the minimum treatment pressure at a rate of 1 cm H2O per minute. However, if sleep onset is not detected, the device will reach the target pressure within 30 minutes.

So it's like this, if you feel the pressure is way to low at the start, it may take as much as 30 minutes for the machine to reach your minimum pressure setting. With Ramp off the machine will spool up to your minimum pressure within seconds.

Sorry - responded before I saw you had posted 2 replies. Just read your reply and I understand - thank you! I think I'll leave ramp on for now as I feel more comfortable with the pressure. Now I just have to get used to the tube, the leaking, keeping my mouth closed, not being able to turn over easily, etc - sigh! And waking up with a really awful hairdo. Smile

No question is stupid! Smile

If you feel suffocated with the pressure at 4, you may want to try turning off the ramp feature. Then when you start your machine it will go right to 6 straight away. That's how I have mine. I usually fall asleep within minutes anyway but 4 would be too low for me.

Can't help you with the hairdo. Smile

Might want to look into hose management. I have a product called the "Hose Buddy". It holds to hose up over my head with enough slack that I can toss and turn without wrapping the hose around my neck. If you have a headboard you may just be able to loop it over the top of it.

I'd like to thank "Apnoa Board for my User Manual which i received this morning Smile Lot more complete than the one with the machine and am looking forward to reading and using it

I feel like I'm drowning/suffocating/overheating and my nose is wet around the nasal pillows even on the lowest setting of the humidifier (setting at 1) and low temp setting (68). So I'm going to try turning off the heat and humidifier completely tonight. The tubing is heated also but there doesn't seem to be a way to turn that off separaately. I'm just surprised to have so much moisture in my nose with such a low setting on the humidifier. So my questions are:

1. Is it ok to turn off the heat and humidifier completely and run the APAP without them? I don't want to damage the machine in case I end up returning it.

2. Is it likely this machine is malfunctioning or is there often a lot of moisture in the nasal pillows even without humidification? FYI I live in northern Calif and the humidity is about 55% today - not super hot or humid.

3. The air coming out feels very warm - is this from the tubing maybe? Is there a way to stop the tubing from being heated? I know that might make more condensation - just trying to get some advice on tweaks to make myself more comfortable.

Thanks very much for any help.

I dislike the feeling of heat as well. I'm approx 3 weeks into CPAP and it really is going terribly. I'm going back to no humidifier and turning off the climate tubing until I see my sleep physician next week. Hopefully he can advise what i'm doing wrong. I believe I've had one successful night with the humidifier, last night again disaster.

But in short yes you can turn off the humidifier and climate tubing.

When I started my pressure was at 8. Also felt like I was suffocating! Found this forum, got the Clinical manual, turned Ramp off, turned EPR to 2, and the rest is history!

I do play with my humidity/temp settings some nights, especially if I am stuffy, I will turn up the temp and the humidity level. But that is why tese machines are adjustable - if it bothers you, by all means turn it off! Getting used to the machine and being in compliance is all about comfort, so do whatever is necessary to be comfortable, including trying different masks. Just try to go a few days or a week at a time after making a change before you make another one; it takes our bodies a bit to adjust.

Now, I am at 9 and under 1 AHI a lot of nights. Wouldn't want to be without my CPAP.

Best of luck!

Dave
