After you uncheck the pie chart, go down the bottom right corner of the preference screen, point the tip of the mouse right on the edge & if you look very carefully you'll see a little blue line appear which is the upper line of the ok box. Click on the line & your pie chart should disappear. I had the same issue with my laptop.
