Except for my first machine (1999 - 2009), I always merged data to the new card, ie my data and profile contains data for 3 machines. Do I really need to have a different profile for each machine? You don't officially need a different profile for each machine, but it can be very useful for troubleshooting as you've found.

In general, I haven't seen problems with multiple machines in the same profile, so long as they're from the same manufacturer. When you mix manufacturers, you sometimes get surprising results. This is a very complicated issue we inherited, and it's not well tested, hence the frequent recommendation to split into multiple profiles when problems arise.

I suspect you'll be totally fine if you import all of your Philips Respironics machines into a single profile, and leave your few nights of Resmed data in a separate one.

(And if you're not, I'll be quite interested to know.)
