Participating in BOINC
#1
Question
While reading Paula's latest posting in the anti-virus thread I noticed that she was running BOINC project(s). My wife and I have been participating in BOINC projects since 2000; currently we are participating in eight projects.

I'm curious whether other forum members are participating in any BOINC projects.

Bob.

Several years ago, I ran some program like that on my two home computers and our office computers for some type of scientific gene medical research or something like that. After a while I checked my processor temps and they were way above normal temps - I realized that the continuous processing was reducing the lifespan of my processors and would eventually lead to an early death, so I quit doing that sort of thing. Not sure if it was the poor programming of the software or not - they were not supposed to go above a certain amount of CPU use but it seemed that this one hogged my CPU and slowed even my normal computing way down, and it was only supposed to use the CPU primarily when the PC was idle. It didn't.

It's a particular software package used to do a lot of computer processing for a particular project using the idle CPU cycles on a large group of volunteers' personal computers. It's a way to get research and computing completed cheaply by using volunteers. It's a form of Distributed Computing called Grid Computing.

This desktop rarely gets turned off. Mostly because I get annoyed at the boot times. Running Boinc just made sense. I have it fairly throttled, though and only running when idle. My brother thinks, though, that I've caused my power supply to die an early death. I think the builder did me wrong. I used someone who builds his computers for work. She built two identical computers, one for me and one for my nephew. The one for me, the one that left the state and was highly unlikely to be returned for repair, has been a major PITA.

But I digress.

I'd love to have a machine set up just for running Boinc stuff, just to see how long it lives. Have it do a reboot once a week. Do a hard boot once a month or more to take a blower to it to clean it out.

During the winter, I use the PC and the UPS to supplement the heat coming out of the register in my den. BananaBananaBananaBanana

The downside being the need to push additional air through the units during summer months.

Right now I have the side off my desktop. The power supply fan got noisy and to "fix" it, I was whacking it with a wooden back scratcher handle. And with the side off, I can hear if it stops working.
