bad sinus congestion

RE: bad sinus congestion
Now I see that someone is selling a device that flushes the sinus area using a vacuum system. It's all self contained, you put the salt water in one compartment and press the unit's nasal pillows into your nose openings. Then press the button to start the small battery driven vacuum pump. It sucks the salt water into one side of your nose and out the other while draining the top compartment into a bottom waste compartment. Isn't that just dandy! Google Navage for more info. and no, I don't have one.

RE: bad sinus congestion
I wanted to add to this thread - I used to have lots of congestion - sometimes having to go home early or missing a day's work because I was sure I was having a severe allergic attack or the onset of a serious cold - could not stop sneezing. Periods of this becoming more frequent. I finally got a referral to an allergist who ran the full gamut of tests and found NOTHING. He did suggest that it was irritation to my nasal passages from the CPAP and recommended Ponaris, lubricating nasal liquid - buy over the counter - you usually have to ask the pharmacist for it though. Also, I saw a youtube video by a doctor affiliated with, I think, Cleveland Clinic and he suggested in the video that upping the humidity helps. I did that and it has helped enormously. I don't need Ponaris as much. Saline sprays or rinses also help. I also have not had a "cold" in two years. I also now have an Autopap machine so the pressure fluctuates and does not irritate as much, in my opinion.

RE: bad sinus congestion
Koobie, glad you found what works for you. I've always had congestion and sinus issues too, a lot worse before Cpap.

I can keep it under control with nasal rinses, nasal gels, and as your say, more humidity.
Good luck.

My head is going to explode. I have been on antibiotics off and on since june. My GP says cpap could not cause this. I don't have any allergies. But my GP says I must have. She's wrong and I can't get her to listen. She will not refer me. My insurance must have a referral. What do I do?Dont-know

I have some comments and questions. I am 6weeks new to CPAP myself.

I too have noticed a significant increase in nasal congestion.

Comment 1, you must be in an HMO 'must have a referral'. If your doctor won't give a referral, then you need to contact the HMO and insist that the doctor address your issue or authorize a referral. If you are forceful and nice about it, generally you will get some satisfaction.

Question 1, was it your 'GP' that prescribed, or did you get referred to a sleep specialist. If a referred sleep specialist, then you may be able to bring this problem to their attention without a new referral.

Comment 2, I have asked both in my case, and the first thing that really helped was going to a regular full face mask. Even the "view" full face mask had an issue.

Comment 3, I have always use a neti pot when I needed it before CPAP, now I am doing it on a regular 2-3 day basis. It does help.

Comment 4, I have been told by many doctors over the years, while you may not have allergies, all the dusts, pollens and stuff in the air is an irritant to all of use with varying degrees. That is why I have neti'd for most of my adult life.

Comment 5, On occasion, I'll be awakened by a severe bout, and I'll get up and take a couple of Sudafeds. Caution here if you have blood pressure/heart issues. They usually work within 30 minutes and I'm good to go.

Comment 6, For your doctor to say 'My GP says cpap could not cause this.', I strongly believe based on my research, they don't know what they are talking about.

Comment 7, I am still playing with combinations of humidity and tube heater settings. I am zeroing in on some good settings for me.

Really? Sudafed is a stimulant, pseudoephedrine, and quite a strong one. I would never be able to sleep with one of those in me.
