Quality Sleep and Dehydration

RE: Quality Sleep and Dehydration
Thanks for all the comments here.

Question...our city water is chlorinated and fluorinated. There used to be a lot of talk that both are bad.

Should I find water that is not chlorinated and fluorinated? (sp?)

To return to the topic of apnea :-)

When you stop breathing, your body stages a little mini panic attack to wake you up enough to kick you back into breathing. So as long as you are cycling through sleep->suffocation->panic->arousal->sleep->suffocation->panic->arousal->sleep->suffocation->panic... over and over again you are marinating in stress hormones. Then if the apneas let up, your body decides the panic is over and you ramp up your kidneys and filter the stress hormones out by filling your bladder. You spend the whole night alternating between waking up because you are being chased by a bear and then waking up with your back teeth floating. And by morning you are seriously dehydrated!

Drinking lots of fluids helps to get you through a lot more cycles of kidney flushes before the dehydration gets really bad. But successfully treating your apnea is even better!

@cathyf

Agreed that hydrating is good. How do you make the bear go away?    Unsure

CPAP chases the bears away!

Before my first sleep study I got up and visited the washroom at least 4 times each night.

I talked to my family doctor (quack) for 1-1/2 years before he agreed to a sleep study. Severe OSA-yes.

After the sleep study, it took 4 months to get an appointment for titration and an RX for a cpap, then 2 months to get a cpap.  That was over 30 years ago. Next appointment with my family doctor he bragged about discovering I had OSA.

Old Northern Ontario expression:  "Sometimes you get the Bear; Sometimes the Bear gets you!"

Dave, 30 years later, the average quack is still as clueless about sleep problems including so-called specialists.

Ok I have to admit that it was my PA who was sure that I had apnea and I was the skeptical one. And she was the one totally freaked out about my desat down to 79 in the screening (enough that she didn't fully enjoy the told-ya-so, LOL). And she has always been totally on board with me managing my own therapy.

I figure that the fancy sleep center people at the flagship medical center are going to be P*ssed at us hicks out here in the country because she's going to be telling all the other sleep apnea patients to at least try the cervical collar!

Quality Sleep & Dehydration==that's why I have a humidifier on my cpap machine.

I bought a heated hose to make the process more comfortable.

My treatment works. I seldom get up in the night now to go to the washroom.

I've made great improvements in my treatment in the last year. It works well because I participate here, and I'm my own advocate.

cathyf I appreciate your comment about the cervical collar.
