I was asking Alan, since he was using "ning jing" as his avatar if he spoke Chinese.

I taught in China at both Szechuan University and at Yanshan University as an exchange professor. I do speak, read and write some Chinese but just enough to get in trouble.

This sounds interesting, something I have not been aware of before.
Am I correct in assuming that the dongle turns your PC into a communications RX? this is my take having had a quick look on Amazon.

In the UK I used to be able to listen to the police on a small Alinco analog receiver, but they went on to a system called Airwave which is more secure and UK specific.

Would be grateful for a quick rundown on these things.

RE: RTL-SDR
Yes that's correct.

This page has a good explanation of what the SDR is and what it can do: http://www.rtl-sdr.com/about-rtl-sdr/

You would need to find out what kind of system they moved to. If it is encrypted, you can forget about tuning them in. Not sure if RadioReference has that info but it's a good place to start looking. If you find it and they have the system they use, you can see if one of the trunking programs like UniTrunker can decode it.

Using FlashAir W-03 SD card in machine. Access through wifi with FlashPAP or Sleep Master utilities.

RE: RTL-SDR
Thanks for the link Alan I will have a read of it.

I would guess Airwave is encrypted, though it is about 15 years old and is to be replaced by a cell based system & smartphones, goodness knows when that will be, the speed the government moves at.

Happy to help. I just started a course on Embedded Systems so if I don't get back to you right away, don't think I gave up on ya.

RE: RTL-SDR
btw, here in Florida I was able to pickup a station on 15MHz from Halifax, Nova Scotia giving a weather report. It appears to be snowing and -5c degrees. This is with a small whip antenna. I haven't put up the discone on the roof yet.
