ResScan Error when Printing/E-Mailing/Saving Reports

ResScan Error when Printing/E-Mailing/Saving Reports
I came across an unusual error with several different versions of ResScan recently and I thought I would mention it here in the hopes that it helps someone else in the future.

The Error:

In a nut shell:
  • After generating a report in ResScan, the user clicks on either, Print, Email, Save, or Save As...
  • One or more error windows will appear, One may indicate that the program cannot write/access the temporary directory. Another may indicate that ResScan.exe caused an error in mshtml.dll
  • ResScan will eventually close

In my case, the error was caused by having Windows DEP (Data Execution Prevention) turned on for All Programs and Services rather then the default setting of just essential Windows programs and services only. Either excluding ResScan.exe from DEP or returning DEP to the default setting fixed this problem.

Given my trouble finding anything on the web about this error and the fact that this setting is somewhat hidden and not the default setting in Windows 7 and below (not sure about Windows 8), I will assume that very few people will run into this problem. If you do find ResScan crashing on you when trying to Print, Email, or Save a report - Check your Windows DEP settings!

RE: ResScan Error when Printing/E-Mailing/Saving Reports
tfeuret, I have ResScan on my laptop so I tried to print out a report. Except I had never printed from it before so I had to tell it where to find the printer. And then Windoze couldn't install the drivers so I had to get it from HP. Then I had to wait for it to install. Arrgghh.

Finally got to print it out.

I encountered no errors so you are probably correct in that it was how you had your computer set up. If the printer thing hadn't happened, I may have tried to duplicate your issue but decided I'd tested Karma's bite enough for one day.

Take a deep breath and count to zen.

This was a process that took several days and more then one Virtual Machine (using VM Ware) to track down. I should say that it MIGHT be specific to my machine/OS (Windows 7 x64bit) but I doubt it. I have come across other weird errors that are hard to track down that end with DEP being the root cause.

My problems weren't just related to Printing...any of the 4 buttons (Print, Email, Save, and Save As...) would generate the problem once the report was created on screen. It may be due in part to the WAY that ResScan generates the printed, saved, emailed files by generating a PDF first (ever notice that there is no Print option in the File menu?)

Anyway, I posted this information here in the hopes that, should someone else encounter the problem, a Google search might save a lot of frustration.

Now if I can only figure out how to edit the ResScan.xml file to get the Tidal Volume and Respitory Rate to show up for my S9 Elite in version 4.2...Thinking-about
