Resmed Hypoallergenic filter

Resmed Hypoallergenic filter
- will the HA filter make the machine motor working harder, noisier and more wear & tear to the motor and shorten the lifespan of the machine ?

- is HA filter the same as the AB (Anti-Bacteria) filter ?
I found there is a setting of the filter in the Resmed AirCurve 10.
AB filter -  Select Yes if you attach an antibacterial filter.   "No / Yes"

- From the clinical manual of Resmed AirCurve 10, there is a warning about AB filter.
"Antibacterial filters increase resistance in the air circuit and may affect accuracy of displayed and
delivered pressure, particularly at high flows."

Will the HA filter affect the accuracy of displayed and delivered pressure ?

Thanks.

The hypoallergenic filter is not the same as the antibacterial (AB) filter.

I don’t believe the hypoallergenic filter affects pressure delivered or reported.

RE: Resmed Hypoallergenic filter
The AB Filter is an external device which fits between the air source and the hose. In the ResMed S10, it requires you to set the "AB Filter" item in the clinician menu to YES. It does affect airflow, hence the need for the setting. It looks like a round or oval plastic chamber with what appears to be filter material in the middle.

The difference between the regular filter and the hypoallergenic filter is the weave and construction. It does not appear to change the delivered pressure or make the equipment run hotter. To the casual observer they look almost identical. I use the Sunset CF 2107-HA Hypoallergenic Filers for ResMed S10 which are ResMed knock-offs and stocked by my DME. The Sunset CF 2107 -1 is the regular version. Visually, the HA version seems darker whenI change filters and may have trapped more particulate matter.

As for the graphs and charts, they are there to impress the FDA and I do not know of any user that has altered their mask choice or therapy based on the numbers.

In the final analysis, it is all about how you feel. Like my doctor says, "You treat the patient, not the machine."

Best of luck.

I believe this image is an example of the AB or antibacterial filter that if used requires the AB filter selection to be ON. Hypoallergenic is not the same as antibacterial.

Sells for about $15.00 on Supplier #1

AB filter (Antibacterial filter) is intended to help folk that suffer from allergies.

"It is used to purify the air and help prevent particles from entering the CPAP during therapy.
The filter acts as an additional barrier for dust and particles, co-existing with the machine's existing filters."

The filter attaches between the machine's air or humidifier outlet and the CPAP hose.

If you use this AB filter, be sure to select "yes" in the machine settings.

RE: Resmed Hypoallergenic filter
Before anyone runs out and buys an antibacterial filter, remember this filter is downstream of the humidifier and can become a source of contamination as it is may be colonized by airborne spores that grow in the warm moist environment. They add a considerable resistance to the airflow and will not work with a heated tube. I have never recommended anyone use an AB filter.

A hypoallergenic filter is simply a felted fiber filter that is made of materials that won't generally cause an allergic reaction. They are not more efficient or better than any other filter. "Hypoallergenic" is a marketing term, not a medical quality, and is used in many different products. There is no accepted definition, test or standard of what is hypoallergenic.

Good post, and you answered some of my questions w/o the need to post them.  Cool

RE: Resmed Hypoallergenic filter
Dave posted the correct image. The AB filter is a hydrophobic membrane, not a woven filter. It will prevent passage of bacteria but not viruses. Hydrophobic means it will not allow the passage of water. As Sleeprider stated, it is much more resistant to airflow than woven filters.  If it becomes too wetted with condensate it will block the passage of air completely. Large hydrophobic filters are used on the air vents of sterile water systems and fernentation tanks and are in heated housings to prevent condensate.  I once saw a stainless steel tank collapse due to failure of the heater. I would not use one on my system.

I side with Sleeprider and Melman on this subject. I have COPD and feel no need to use any filter other than the standard one that is for the PAP unit.
