Resmed S9 VPAP with COPD support for Mom
Hi Guys,

I suggested that my mom get a sleep study due to her COPD and other complications.  I have not been able to see her sleep study, however my understanding is that she has moderate OSA.  She ended up with a Resmed Airsense 10.  I have found a very good deal on a Resmed S9 VPAP with COPD support, that I hope will help .

I have requested the clinical manual for the S9, however initial setup and programing are not familiar to me.  I could certainly use some guidance on if this is the best machine and some sort of approach to initial settings.  My mom is on three litres of 02 and I think suffers from CO2 build up.  Currently she is on fixed pressure of 9 and 9, recently reduced from 11 and 11 due to difficulty to exhale.   She is seeing a pulmonologist, however I think his qualifications suspect due to equipment choice.

I need help understanding the following issues:
1.  Machine choice, S9 VPAP with COPD brand new 0 hours, very good price.  Is this a good choice?  Is there a better choice.  Cost of S9 $600.00
2.  What information do I need from my mother, so that I may inquire on this forum in an attempt to offer her advice?
3.  Help in understanding settings, theory, oximetry and other things.
4.  How to help guide my mom if she cannot find a doctor to oversee.  Certainly do not think that she is getting the proper attention.
5.  Is there any way to gain remote access to her machine by using the Resmed software or to use sleepyhead?

Certainly, this is a very broad topic, however any insight that you guys have is appreciated.  She is 83 and her quality of life at this point is not great, thanks again!

That's a really good deal for the machine, and given your Mom's diagnosis, I'd get it. You do need to speak to her sleep doc about setup. What you really want is a specialist who focuses primarily on COPD. Find out who is in-network for your Mom and call around. Unlike my brother's conditions, COPD is well known, so shouldn't be too hard to find someone.

Also, have her ask the doc if he chose that machine over the COPD machine because of insurance requirements. You may or may not know, but often less expensive machines need to be trialed and failed before they can write a script for a more expensive one. She can leave a message.

The Resmed page seems helpful: https://www.resmed.com/us/en/commercial-...-copd.html

Thanks for the reply Mosquitobait. I think that she really needs an expert as you pointed out, she is about two hours east of Chapel Hill, NC (she lives in a rural area) and we are reaching out to the University hospital to see if we can find a doctor.
