RE: numbers going up slightly [Rice95 Therapy Thread]
Yes. I was diagnosed with him and I was told I had to purchase a Respironics machine from him.

We were charged the full amount on our credit card after the ‘insurance discount’

What is my recourse?

You'll probably get better answers, but if this happened to me, I'd have to keep the Respironics since it's paid for. I'd fire and replace shady doc; he lied in that you were required to buy a PAP from him.

Contact Supplier #2 second wind. Find the ResMed that's similar. I don't remember which Respironics PAP you've got, but if it's CPAP or APAP get ResMed AutoSet. Find it on second wind and then call them to confirm hours and price. Also arrange to sell them your Respironics.

Hi Dave

Well, my doc never said I was ‘required’ to purchase only his, but he said I only deal in Respironics and I’m certainly naive and naively thought ‘that’s the way it has to be’ in the world of doctor patient relationships in the world of ENT visits and diagnosed patients ...so in essence I was mislead , and way over paid for a machine.

What should I do here ?

What to do now?
Your numbers are very good as long as your chin is behaving.  That will be an issue on any xPAP.
This means that your PR CPAP Pro will work for you.  When you get to about 5 years of use (about 15,000 hours) check with us before you replace it.  Now the replacement choice would be the ResMed Autoset.  You DO NOT NEED to replace it now.

Rest assured that we will help you through any and all apnea/cpap issues that you run into.
On Replacement, the fewer the hours the better the unit.  Supplier #2 acquires low hour units and resells them at a fair price, much lower than a DME price.  If you choose to replace your unit with an Autoset, the sooner you do it the better the finances will be for you.  In any case you will not get what you paid for it.  The choice is yours, as I said above, You DO NOT NEED to replace it.

what to do

  1. Get physical (electronic forms in your hands are ok) copies of all your sleep tests (for your records)
  2. Get a copy of your prescription
  3. Identify a new doctor to manage your sleep apnea, I'm assuming you have lost confidence in your current doctor.
  4. "Fire" your doctor

Thank you so much Dave, Gideon and OpalRose

You have all been so much help. Numbers last night below 2, so the collar is really working. I’ll stick it out for 5 years and get as much money out of it as I can and then contact you guys and get the Res Med of your choice ...I’m sure technology will advance even more in 5 years.

Bless you guys. I’ll post my chart again when something odd occurs on Oscar.

Would someone mind renaming my thread ‘Rice95 Therapy’ and do away with ‘numbers going up’

Again bless you guys

Thank you Rice95.  It's rewarding to see someone able to improve upon their therapy, as we all know that our Doctors and DME's often put profits before what's best for the patient and just aren't that helpful.

I sometimes think if every Doctor and DME were required to wear this equipment on their faces every night, that they would have more compassion.  I don't see that ever changing, as they only look at the total AHI.  If it's under 5, they think all is well.

Don't stay away, feel free to post some updated charts here whenever to need to.

RE: Rice95 Therapy
Rice95, I have one further suggestion. Request your primary doctor take over the role of managing your CPAP therapy. You no longer need a specialist and can accurately identify problems and work to solve them. Your primary doc can continue to provide prescriptions as needed, and follow up on your therapy on an annual basis. It only involved asking if you're using your CPAP and how is is going. You can save the time and cost of a specialist, and your copies of the sleep studies, and records of initial prescriptions and any doctor's notes from your specialist will suffice to renew machines and equipment for a long time. I never saw a specialist after my first sleep study, and I certainly don't agree with the way your specialist pads his profits while getting his patients the bare minimum machine. You can do this with a doctor you know and trust. Get your records, and change your care provider.
