Sleep Apnea and Maintenance of wakefulness test
Hi, recently diagnosed with severe OSA after being referred by my Dr. The sleep specialist after my diagnosis said I also needed to do a lung function test and Maintenance of Wakefullness test. I don't feel tired during the day, and get 7 hours sleep at night, haven't randomly fallen asleep and had an Epworth score of 4. Is it Normal to be referred for this test after an OSA detection or is he just creating more work for himself?

RE: Sleep Apnea and Maintenance of wakefulness test
The Maintenance of Wakefulness Test was something I had to do to have my commercial driving licence reinstated, if I hadn't done it I would only have been able to drive my private car... which would have meant the end of what I do for a job.
My licence was suspended for 6 months on medical grounds after I crashed a work vehicle when I fell asleep at the wheel fourteen hours in to my fourth long work day. Are there any conditions being imposed on your driving licence? Was your OSA found as a result of some form of accident? [work or otherwise] As far as I know the MWT is only required if there is some specific work or driving compliance issue in Australian States.

No conditions on driving licence, though since being diagnosed I have had to suspend my pilots licence. To satisfy the flying authorities I only need 14 days of CPAP data to show I'm managing it. I was only refered for sleep study as BMI was 35 and my greater than 42cm, though at study it was 41cm. no flying or traffic accidents

It sounds like your sleep doctor is just being thorough. Perhaps they noted low oxygen levels during your sleep test.
I had to have a lung function test too as my oxygen levels dipped to 69% at one point. It's just precautionary and not a big deal. Better safe than sorry. Good luck and keep us posted.

Since you ae a pilot who wants to reactivate your license, this sounds prudent if not required. Public safety, micro-sleeps and all that.

Since you are new to all this I'll direct you to a Wiki article you should read. It doesn't include the test you are inquiring about.

Before cpap I did not know I was sleeping while doing other things. I knew something was wrong but not what. When it was pointed out to me that I had just run through a red light while driving I was shocked. I was driving and talking a passenger and could recall the conversation and traffic up until just before the intersection. I had no recall after that. I think I only awoke when alerted after the blank time.
It was not a happy moment. cpap has helped.

This process in Australia seems very ad hoc. I remember a post from a rural Queensland poster whose GP got her driving licence suspended by dobbing her in to QLD Transport. Aussies will know that being unable to drive a car in the bush makes life very difficult. After my sleep study I was given some literature to read from SNORE Australia part of which referred to possibly having my licence suspended. My licence is still current with only an eyesight caveat on it. I suspect that a lot of this is just luck of the draw. |
