I had a sleep study done about five years ago and was given a brick. But recently, I have not been sleeping so well. Instead of a sleep study I have been given an auto machine. It works well for me and I don't see why with all its data, I would need another sleep study.

Not sure if it varies from region to region, but around here doctors have to be specially trained in order to be able to prescribe CPAP related stuff. Trust me, if my PCP (GP) could prescribe, he would cause it would mean more patient visits and more billing.

I had an at home sleep study, and after my doctor got the results this week, they immediately told me I'd be getting an auto CPAP. Don't know exactly what model yet. I was actually a little surprised because this forum makes it seem like doctors don't care, don't keep up with better treatment options, and DME's are scammers.

The people who deal with the bad DME outfits are most likely to complain. My own DME is pretty good so I haven't complained.

Like every other group of people, there are the good and the bad, and the bad attract complaints while the good are just expected to be good.

I have also had a mostly good experience with my DME and have a doc who is great. The Doc is an apnea patient himself even tho quite young and fit, so is not marooned in apnea stereotypes. He is also a lover of all things tech and is fascinated by my use of a wifi card and the sleepyhead software. He wishes all his patients took an active approach in their care and encourages me to discuss changes with him, but then make them.

The DME has been prompt, and only issue auto machines no matter the Rx. This is great - and seems rare on this board Big Grin On the down side, they are somewhat conservative with new items and I haven't been able to get a dreamware mask to try yet, and like most of the others you cannot order your supplies online which I wish they would change. They also did the original dispensing of the apaps in a "class" setting with 6 attendees. The bad part about that is that they did not do their homework on any individuals particular insurance, gave all financial and coverage information in averages, and made you sign papers for the transaction in that group setting. This would not be so bad, but the coverage information is not readily available from insurers either, and there is disinformation at every turn. I have 100% DME coverage, but nothing anywhere tells me 100% of *what* or replacement schedules, so the information from the DME is what I have to go on. Good news is, the insurance has payed everything the DME charged so far over the last 1 year plus, whether I thought it was reasonable or not.

Tongue Suck Technique for prevention of mouth breathing:
  • Place your tongue behind your front teeth on the roof of your mouth
  • let your tongue fill the space between the upper molars
  • gently suck to form a light vacuum

Practising during the day can help you to keep it at night
