North Carolina is driving me nuts. They gave ANY DMV worker the ability to flag a driver's license. I got sarcastic with one about six years ago and he got mad. If he had explained why he was asking personal questions, I would have been nicer. But he didn't. Anyway, it had nothing to do with sleep apnea. Good grief, I hope not. There's enough to fill out as it is! Every two years, I get this huge stack of crap to sweet talk a doc into filling out.

In Texas, there are no issues for either a general license (non-commercial) or a motorcycle endorsement, both of which I possess. Don't know about commercial. As far as I remember (we renew every 4 or 6 years, don't remember which, and mine is due next year), there was no question about apnea at all. We frequently just fill in a simple form and get a renewal by mail. Every other renewal, we have to go get a picture taken - but no test, written or oral.

Zonk: My granddaughter (in her mid-20s) is applying for a work permit in Australia (leaving in Nov) whereby she can spend up to a year there working as needed and seeing the country. (And current plans involve doing the same for NZ the next year.) Are you aware of anything in particular she might need for a driver's license - temporary or otherwise? Would a license issued by the AAA here be valid there? Any advice you could pass on? Frankly, her being alone so far away terrifies me, but she has both visited and/or worked temporarily, as an unpaid volunteer, in other countries before, the lastest being Thailand. The last was a college graduation present, which, when promised, was years in the future.

The sad part is your "sin" of not being a "sheeple" is being held against you. I am glad I moved from NC.

Any commercial motor vehicle operator involved with interstate commerce MUST have a DOT medical card in the US. You are screened for OSA as part of the exam and if high risk must have sleep study to get your DOT card.

If you have OSA you must have compliance data downloads reviewed at least once a year by your treating sleep doc showing at least 4 hours on pressure 70% of the nights.

Canada is the opposite.... if you have sleep apnea and are not compliant on treatment your doctor is required to notify the department of transportation and they pull your license.. commercial or regular.

In Western Australia & South Australia, sleep apnea sufferers must have a doctor fill in a form verifying that they use CPAP each time they renew their license. The fine in WA for not complying is $500 in WA.
