Sleep specialists let another sufferer down
Yesterday, I sold my Devilbiss Sleepcube. Now that I can operate my Resmed machine from a 12V source, it is surplus to requirements. I think I only used it a handful of times and preferred my Resmed machines.
But I was saddened to hear just how little the guy who bought it knew about his condition, how CPAP works, and how to set up the machine. Not surprised though.
Of course, this is typical, but as the folks in here know, simply handing a machine over to a new patient with little or no education pretty much dooms them to failure unless they are the motivated, tech-savvy and persistent type.
He had been loaned a Resmed Autosense, which had been set to 10 - 18CM. He hadn't been coached on mask fit, managing leaks or how humidifiers work. He wasn't a stupid guy, and I imagine that I was him ten years ago, totally reliant on my 'expert'. He hadn't even been educated on the relative merits of nasal vs FF masks.
Like so much of 'healthcare' these days, our front line services appear to be mostly sales staff in white coats.
I gave him a few tips and pointed him to Apnea Board. I hope he pops up here so you guys can help him get on top of this, because he has heart failure and really needs to conquer his apnea.
