I once saw an allergist here in the US who had immigrated from Canada. He told me that the Canadian health system works great as long as you never get sick.

The main problem with healthcare in the US, in my opinion, is the way the government responds to the insurance company lobbyists and campaign contributors. The medical insurance companies and equipment providers are making a fortune while the rest of our economy has tanked. 60% of individual bankruptcies in the US are caused by medical bills.
We need insurance to cover costs for patients, but we need our politicians to take charge of the situation and stop pandering to them. It should be a law that all charges must be stated, and made readily known to the public, up front before the service is provided, including the portion paid by insurance. Employers should be required to provide their employees with vouchers to cover out-of-pocket costs up to a limit. Extra insurance would kick in for catastrophic events.
These types of arrangements have been shown to work. The only thing stopping them from being implemented in the US is the insurance company's lobbying efforts. The fact that the insurance companies are so dead set against implementing them should tell you something.
