RE: Son gets his machine today
His first night he got just under 4 hrs of therapy with an AHI of 3.5 - tore off the mask 2 hrs in, woke 2 hrs later, then got 2hrs more. Couldn't breathe for the later session, and turned ramp on... i think his nose was plugged. Says he can tell its going to be awesome based on the first bit - felt better just with that. Pressures were surprisingly (to me) low to keep his apnea in check. Definitely needs tweaking, but not yet!

Hes wearing a P10 and his nose got sore. I have some ideas for that thanks to the board. The DME told him his beard will prevent him from using a FFM --- but I think that's not really true.... If the P10 fails for him, he will need to look at the beard threads. Also need to find the threads on how respironics does leaks - so we can tell if he is mouth breathing, but my instinct says that if he had his pressure would have maxxed, and it did not. only hit 13 (in the last 2 hrs - 12 in the first 2)

Tongue Suck Technique for prevention of mouth breathing:
  • Place your tongue behind your front teeth on the roof of your mouth
  • let your tongue fill the space between the upper molars
  • gently suck to form a light vacuum

Practising during the day can help you to keep it at night

What size pillow is he using in the P10 and where is the soreness? Has he tried going up/down a size? 3.5 first night is impressive.

I did quite a bit of experimentation with that mask, and just couldn't make it work for me. My go-to for a nasal pillow, when I need a change of pace, is the Nuance, but I cannot wear it all night, either, with any size cushion.

I have a good friend who has full beard, uses a Eson and a Mirage without issue. He's trying a WISP and not having great success. I am convinced the key to successful therapy is finding the proper mask. That can be an expensive proposition, as everyone knows!

the DME will make sure he has a mask that works! So that is good! His apnea is very severe, and they seem to actually care about that and how important therapy will be for him. He is using the medium pillows, and will probably try the small tonight (we all have little noseys) but I think its more likely that the strap is too tight and he should stick with the med. I can wear a small, and mine is smaller than his by at least a little. His head is not large either - probably very medium. P10 might not be right for him, but if it can work its the bestest! As far as where his nose is sore - i will be talking to him about that. also need to get permission to share his SH graphs... some of his results are puzzling... such as a TV that stays in the thousands.

My nostrils got a little sensitive the first couple of nights, so I put Tamanu Oil on them in the morning. Did the trick. We got ours from Aura Cacia. I wash my nostrils every night before use and the pillow once a week.

Search on "Medicine Hunter Tamanu Oil."

If soreness is on the outside, pillow is too large. If in the middle of the nose, pillow is too small. Generalizations, but a lot of people use too small a size on the P10. I was not a big fan of the headgear, either, being an active sleeper. And I have a big head.

It is great that his DME will help with masks that way - I had to buy a bunch of them out of pocket - but it is worth it as you know to find one that works for YOU.

Now if ResMed would make a P10 pillow size between medium and large... Smile

yes - i am between XS and S so I hear that! I have a FX for her mask that might suit him better. He probably wont be annoyed as badly by the air vent as I am.

I don't have Tamanu Oil, but I have Black Seed Oil - which is amazing stuff - if the soreness is external.

Lots of things to try. And that is a good thing! Point it they need to work for many nights in a row. And we can't find that perfect fit quickly, because of that.

I'm lucky to have found a mask that suits me as quickly as I did, and I hope your son has similar success.

It's all about the mask Smile

Have you told him "Welcome to the dark side, my young apprentice?"
Get the free OSCAR CPAP software here.
Useful links.
Click here for information on the main alternative to CPAP.
If it's midnight and a DME tells you it's dark outside, go and check it yourself.

ROFLMAO

He got the heated hose, but it didn't work, and the menu is locked.... found an old thread --- he got the 60w power supply and not the required 80. sighhhhh! Turns out he needs a lot more air than 7 to feel comfy. We turned it up. I wanted him to try 10 based on last nights reports, but he went for 12. So now he is set to 12 to 18. We shall see how he does.

SH sets his max tidal volume at > 6000..... is that even possible?
