Sore around
Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could help me.
I've been using my Cpap and Zest nasal mask for about two years now, but for some reason two weeks ago I started to get a red mark were the mask sits around my nose, now the skin is flaking on one side, and under my nose is really sore, I have had a few rain outs but I can't see that being a problem,
Can anyone help me?
Thank you for your time Smile

RE: Sore around
Could be dermatitis caused by rubbing or infection, if you haven't been keeping the mask clean and relatively sterile. I'd see your GP or dermatologist for a cortisone cream and check your mask for irregular edges or any build up of bacteria.

It may be Impetigo. Impetigo is a Staph/Strep infection that does require Antibiotics. It is also very contagious.

I recently had a Sleep Study done and did contract Impetgo from the Sleep Lab's mask! Got an infection right on the bridge of my nose where the mask was resting.

They obviously did a very poor job of sterilizing the mask from the last Patient! Can you say NASTY!

Was I P*ssed ? Heck yea I was!

Yup, could be as well - either way, see your doc.

Welcome, Karla!
Good idea to get the lesions checked on, just to be sure.

Hi Karala, Welcome to Apnea Board
First you need to let the affected area to heal so does not get infected, have it checked by your GP or skin specialist

Have you tried nasal pillows, nasal pillows have less contact on the face
Wash cushion in soap and rinse well in water after each use
How long since cushion or straps been replaced, cushion do wear out and straps get loose over time.

Mask liner may help, piece of cotton material with hole in the center placed between your face and mask cushion
You can make your own mask liner and there are ready made ones, RemZzzs and pad a cheek

If the rainout coming from the hose, try place machine lower than your bed and get a hose cover/wrap to insulate the hose (you can make your own hose cover using some flannelette sheets/fabric) turn down humidity a notch would help but adding the hose cover might just do the trick

S8 lightweight offers compliance data only (hours of use) and does not offer any efficacy data AHI, leak, etc..

On-line US prices are lot cheaper than rip-off prices charged in Australia

For some spot first aid you could try a dab of Neosporin/Polysporin and a small square bandaid on the nose.
That should help in till you can get it looked at.

RE: Sore around
How long have you had this current mask?

Wash it well. Let it air dry completely. Use something as a barrier between your skin and the mask like one of the mask liners. Someone here makes their own out of old t-shirts.

It is odd that it is a mask you've used a long time and just now having issues with it. Ask the supplier what has changed with the mask. New material or new source for them? We can become allergic to anything at any time, no matter how many times we have previously used or consumed it. Go to your regular doc and have the spot checked out.
