Statins make me hurt
#1
I take atorvastatin. Recently they upped the dose.
I now feel like I've gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson.
(And naturally took a pounding.)

Anyone else experience this? And, are statins really that effective?

Yes, Big Time! For years I took the brand name Lipitor without any problems, both the 20mg and the 40mg. When Lipitor became generic I was switched to it. Immediately my joints started aching and I could barely move. I was then switched back to the brand name but couldn't tolerate it anymore. So now I can't take anything in the statin family. I was put on Zetia less than a week ago. It works in the lower intestine instead of the liver. So far, I'm good to go!

I hope you feel better.

I hope that your doc has checked your liver just to be on the safe side.

I refused to take statins. Do a google search and you might be surprised at what you read about statins.

hope you call your doc and they will figure out what is causing this. I think you may have already done this, but, do a google search on statins and you might be really surprised at what you read. Of course, we never know for sure about accuracy but what I have read a few years back was enough for me to stay away from them. One of my in-laws takes Lipitor but since they are in their early 90's I just kept quiet about what I had read about statins.

My liver enzymes such as SGOT and SGPT are well within normal range.

I've heard that the studies done on statins were flawed. I've also heard that cholesterol is not the real culprit. Inflammation is the issue. Plaque build up is a response to inflammation.

I was diagnosed with Graves Disease in 1988. I've had blood work done every 6 months since. Except for an elevated LDL and triglycerides I'm quite healthy otherwise.

Ask your doc to switch you to Pravastatin or fluvastin and see if that helps.

yes. I have tried every statin on the market without success, including the ones made for people with this (common) sensitivity. My cholesterol is too high - but if I wasn't Diabetic it might be considered borderline high. runs 225 to 250. (with a bad ratio Tongue) I won't use statins. I told my doctor that the quality of life while on them is not worth maintaining. My stress echo test came thru without any evidence of blockages or thinning which helped her to accept my intransigence Big Grin

Tongue Suck Technique for prevention of mouth breathing:
  • Place your tongue behind your front teeth on the roof of your mouth
  • let your tongue fill the space between the upper molars
  • gently suck to form a light vacuum
Practising during the day can help you to keep it at night

Daria, as a diabetic, your best protection is a good diet and exercise, and that will keep your cholesterol from being a problem, no matter what the level. Do whatever makes you fell healthy and well, and only take statins when your levels are out of control. On the whole, if you can, through lifestyle changes, can keep your levels within the 25% risk levels, you will still have a good chance of staying statin free.
