Rancid grease may have been the source of the odor. Depending on the type of grease you may also have had growth of an environmental bacterium that could use the grease or material in the dust as a nutrient. It would not have been pathogenic but could have been smelly. If there were much buildup it may have absorbed sufficient moisture from the passing air to support growth. Interesting.
