[Symptoms] Ear problems

Question
Ear problems
Good afternoon everyone.  This is my first time on a forum.  I have severe SA, and have been on my AirSense for a few years...I am set up for humidity, but hardly use it.  In the past  months, I have developed a severe double ear infection, and now after two follow ups I have liquid in my middle ear again....It is really aggravating not hearing well.  Last night it all of a sudden hit me that I filled up my water tank last week...and I am wondering if maybe that is causing my problems... I have not read about CPAP and ear infections...just curious if anyone has had any common issues?  Of course I am not on antihistamines and Fluonase, so hopefully it will clear up... just curious on the dry air vs humidity issue.

RE: Ear problems
Hi jkunnen,
Welcome to Apnea Board!

There are a few folk here that have experienced ear problems since starting Cpap. I’m not saying that is the cause of your ear problem, but here is a link to a thread you might find helpful.

I have experienced balance problems and my ears have felt full (under pressure). I was diagnosed with Meniere's disease. It flares up on occasion. An ENT can determine if you have it.

Good Luck

Welcome

RE: Ear problems
I get an inner ear pain every so often. But all I have to do is pinch my nose then close my mouth abd blow into my mouth it relieves the ear pressure. It dose not happen all the time , just once and a while.

RE: Ear problems
It wouldn't be a bad idea to thoroughly clean your water tank, your hoses, and your mask.

I would recommend your busy some Control III disinfectant and use that to clean everything.  You can buy it online.

NOTE:  READ THE FLIPPING DIRECTIONS!!!

Control III is fairly nasty until you dilute it, but pretty benign after that.   You should still follow the directions, even on the diluted solution.

You don't need to use the Control III that often, but one really good cleaning cycle would be a good idea.

BTW, I'm not convinced that dirty CPAP equipment has much effect on infections, but it's not that hard to clean it well and do it right.

As for humidity being good or bad for the ear, I suspect it could go either way.   Dry air might irritate things in your nose.   Some people are irritated by too much humidity.

Do you use distilled water in the water tank?

Change your air filter in your CPAP machine as well, if you haven't changed it recently.
Get the free OSCAR CPAP software here.

If it's midnight and a DME tells you it's dark outside, go and check it yourself.

RE: Ear problems
The bacteria that most commonly cause middle ear infections will not grow in the water in your humidifier or on the surfaces of CPAP equipment. The pressure could possibly contribute to conditions that could increase susceptibility to infection but CPAP components are extremely unlikely to be the source of the infectious organisms. They are often already present as the normal flora of the upper respiratory tract. Changing the filter regularly is a good practice but it is there to protect the machine from dust accumulation, not the user from airborne bacteria.
