[Symptoms] Home test clears me, but oxygen sat levels are LOW. Please help. Scared.

RE: Home test clears me, but oxygen sat levels are LOW. Please help. Scared.
There was a really great movie in 1969 called "The Reivers"; few people have ever seen it, but it was just terrific. 1905 Memphis, a bright yellow "Wynton Flyer" automobile, and a great adventure. Narrated by the incomparable Burgess Meridith, directed by the great Mark Rydell, music by pre-Star Wars John Williams in his first score.

In a climactic scene where a young boy is about to have a head-to-head horse race with an adult, the adult taunts him as his horse actively prances around the young boy's horse just before the race, saying "Scared, kid?"

Steve McQueen, in my favorite role of his, pulls the young boy aside and tells him "You can be scared if you want - you can't help that - but don't be afraid, son."

That moment still sticks with me. In dark moments I think about that distinction. If you are scared, it means you are hypersensitive to dangerous conditions, which is a good thing, because it means you are highly motivated to actively deal with things to the best of your ability. But if you are afraid, you are just emotionally paralyzed, you are frozen in fear, and your fear may be getting in the way of you acting in your best interests.

From what you post here, you are scared; not afraid. While never comfortable, that may actually be a good thing, even the best thing. It is all right to be scared, because it appears that it is motivating you to do everything possible to deal with the problem. So you are on the right path here. Just don't let it keep you from doing what you need to do. IOW, don't be afraid.

Part of what scares me is when I don't understand what is going on. I think in this case, that the more you discover why this is happening, the more comforted and the less scared you will be. Being scared may be, in this case, a temporary condition, meaning if you act properly on the motivation, it will likely pass. Being afraid implies a state of non-action, that may not pass.

So be thankful that you are scared rather than afraid, deal, and move forward. It sounds like you have the wherewithal to do all of that pretty effectively.

Good luck; we're always here for you.

Thank you so much. You are a sweetheart to help me like this. I haven't loaded the software yet, but I will do so. I just need to find out if I can run the recorder and the alarm at the same time. By the way, I don't know if I before mentioned this, but I am currently on Augmentin for Bronchitis, and I also take a low dose of Klonopin (but trying to taper down from my .5 a day,) and I almost never take it right before bed, because I know it can affect breathing and slow it down.

Here is the result of my report from ResMed, in case you are interested in checking it out:

ConfusedInRI, just going by straight figures you don't have Obstructive or Central Sleep Apnea, your AHI needs to be above 5 to have mild sleep apnea, having said that there are 70 - 80 other sleep disorders that you could have.
I would push for a sleep study in a clinic or hospital and get proper results, personally I don't like home sleep studies and I would look for another Dr perferably a Sleep Specialist and one that you can work with you and you with them.

This is your life and your future so make sure you do everything you have to to get the results that will set your mind at ease.

Perhaps it is nighttime Asthma? I have an appointment
with a pulmonologist at the end of the month.

Could also be GERD or silent reflux. I have an
appointment with my gastro guy this week.

Just get them to knock out one thing at a time until you find the problem, then stick with your treatment

yeah, I was thinking that the study you had, was it at home or in a lab? Did they get EEG brain wave proof that you were actually sleeping? If a home study, your results might have been as good as they were, because you were not actually sleeping, and not relaxed enough to get the apneas or desaturations you get without the interference.

You definitely need to record your nighttime SpO2 and look at the data.

Don't worry too much about the SpO2 short term. Those kinds of levels are more of a long term thing, not a thing where you're likely to die in the next few weeks.

Don't assume your problems are necessarily sleep apnea. It could be something else.
Get the free OSCAR CPAP software here.
Useful links.

If it's midnight and a DME tells you it's dark outside, go and check it yourself.

Hi ConfusedInRI

I can understand your panic.

The one thing about your experience that I would like to take issue with is the Home 'Sleep Test'.

IMHO such a test is a useful screening test at best with the potential to be seriously misleading at worst.
I suggest that you would do well to arrange a referral to a full Sleep Test in a fully equipped lab where they can look at the full range of factors affecting sleep and respiration.

I hope you get the solution you need.

Cheers

David

Agreed. I am also going back to the gastro doc, and the ENT and Pulmonologist, because I am a mouth breather at night due to nasal allergies or problems.

Thank you for your kindness.
