[Symptoms] More than a year of therapy, morning headaches again?

More than a year of therapy, morning headaches again?
Been on therapy for more than a year and all has been hunky dory except..........

For some weeks now I have been waking up with slight headaches again. Unlike the previous morning headaches these do persist for a bit throughout the day. But these headaches do seem stronger upon awakening. And yes I have been to the doctor and upshot is I have high BP too. Real life has been rather too stressful of late. Also  on Sept 5th will be having a MRI due to these headaches, tinnitus and vertigo.

My AHI persist in being below 1 on the whole, so its not apnea induced headaches. However I have been sleeping supine more and more (natural to me) which has brought on acid reflux. For eg last night I had to wake up to sleep semi upright to deal with painful acid reflux and this appears to ease the headache. I am grasping at straws as to what might be bringing these headaches on again. Could it be that I am breathing in CO2 when asleep somehow? Would getting an oximeter help in giving answers?

Thoughts anyone?

This is just a guess. Could they be sinus induced headaches?

Is your blood pressure controlled?  Our needs change in time and BP meds may need to be changed or dosage adjusted.

Also, as Crimson Nape suggests sinus issues...or allergies can cause headaches.

I think its worth chasing that down.  I was rebreathing CO2 on the P10 mask so I switched to the Brevida.  Headaches gone.

Headaches can have many causes. Last year, my brother had an infection BEHIND his eye (something that could only be seen with an MRI) causing a fierce headache. Last week it was a brain bleed. Mom and I have had problems with headaches caused alternatively by new pollen, gas fumes from construction equipment outside our home and the fumes/residue from the fires out west. I also get headaches when I simply don't get enough sleep - I can see on my Sleepyhead report that I've woken up repeatedly. So, when it's persistent and not expected, best to check it out.

I fully support getting an oximeter since you are having persistent headaches. If anything is concerning, you can take it with you to your appointment with your regular doctor.

I am not sure but I do not really suffer from sinusitis and related issues. I know people who complain about the problem as being heavy and above the eyes but my headaches are more behind my head rather at my face.

I have not taken anything for high blood pressure ........yet. Think my doctor is waiting for this period of enforced rest to pass before making any suggestions. Have read up on the internet on 'how to' and definitely will be
  • reducing salt intake
  • eating more food with potassium-think will start my day with a banana at the very least
  • been socialising too much recently and have to stop resorting to a drink to help me sleep
  • will be doing more walking and running in an effort to reduce even more weight
  • do not smoke anyway
  • cut down even more on caffeine-how much more?? Only take one coffee in morning and 2 more cups of tea per day-so I am hardly an addict!!
  • try to get more sleep-again stress has brought on broken and disturbed sleep recently
Thank you both Crimson Nape and OpalRose. I think you are onto something with allergies as I have been getting itchy eyes and mouth with eating the inoffensive cherries yesterday!! Likewise for apples!! I have never had problems with both fruits before in my life. So it could be allergies induced headaches - but the only problem is they are there when I awaken in the morning.

Thanks for your reply, Sonicboom.

How did you confirm that it was CO2? Did you get an oximeter to discover? Would it confirm that?

Oh your poor brother-am pleased he got it seen to. Hope he is on the mend and not suffering anymore.

Gas fumes are definitely headache inducing and so too from fire pollutants. There has been loads of spontaneous wild fires world wide with this spate of hot dry spells everywhere, even here in the recent freaky hot spell here!!

When I was younger and growing up in the tropics, I used to get migraine type headaches. And like you, persistent headache sufferers like us know our triggers. Like you, I also get headaches due to lack of sleep and that might be part of it. I would also get headaches from needing to go to the loo and holding on too long-causes tension in me and leads to headaches. Since living in the UK, my migraine attacks have all but disappeared due to the cooler climate.

Being horrifically concerned about my blood pressure, I bought a home blood pressure monitor. Last night's first reading was shockingly high still at over  160/100!! However first thing this morning was better at 132/83-still high from being first thing in the morning but at least not over 140.

So I am definitely going to get an oximeter to test my overnight oxygen levels. Thanks all for the support in helping to make my mind up.

I was about to get an oximeter for that very purpose when someone else posted about re-breathing CO2 with nasal pillows particularly at lower cpap pressures which I use. Can't remember the thread now. I was always a bit concerned with the exhalation ports on the P10s. Seemed like the holes weren't large enough. I had also read here that some had resorted to cutting larger holes in the mesh ports of that mask but I was reticent to start compromising the mask as a first resort. Additionally, I had noticed that the P10s were slightly dislodging when I turned at night so leak rate was increasing over time and I was also getting dry eyes. Due to a combination of these conditions and while I was researching oximeters I thought I would experiment with a new mask. The Brevida solved all of these problems for me at once so for now I've put off the oximeter. Whether an oximeter would accurately evaluate CO2 consumption by showing oxygen desat levels is beyond my expertise but I thought it would be a good place to start if a new mask didn't work.  Hope that helps.
