[Symptoms] Zero improvement with CPAP

RE: Zero improvement with CPAP
Resmed S9 Autoset doesn't report on RERA events, but it will treat them if the pressure is allowed to rise as far as it needs to. Your AHI can be quite low, but RERA can keep you from having good restful sleep. I set mine on straight 7 for an experiment and while my AHI was not high, I felt awful. I have moderate OSA with lots of RERA. My guess is that you need a higher pressure to stop the arousals.

Tongue Suck Technique for prevention of mouth breathing:
  • Place your tongue behind your front teeth on the roof of your mouth
  • let your tongue fill the space between the upper molars
  • gently suck to form a light vacuum

Practising during the day can help you to keep it at night

RE: Zero improvement with CPAP
You will find that there are two major issues with CPAP. The first is the treatment of apnea's and the second is getting the machine set right so you continue to use it to treat your apnea.

Without looking at your sleep data from the machine, it looks like your apnea is being treated as it should.

You now need to find the other settings and mask that allows you to get a good nights sleep with "an alien sitting on your face, blowing air up your nose". This is a trial and error thing. Make a change and try it, if you feel better in the morning keep the change and move to the next one. Sometimes it takes a couple days to evaluate a change.

I am a month into it with lots of setting changes and 3 different masks so far, I still want better sleep and am not done yet. I am also SO much better than before CPAP

Update:

Hello All.

I turned my loaned machine in at the end of the month and waited another 3 weeks to meet with a lung spcialist.

I met with the lung specialist last week and after he reviewed my data he gave me a prescription for a CPAP with constant(fixed) pressure and another prescription for a machine with variable pressure. He explained that I am free to request whichever machine I prefer but his professional opinion is that the cheaper machine without variable pressure is as good as a variable pressure machine. He sais the machine with variable pressure was a worth the difference in price only for patients who have a heard time adapting to the CPAP.

Also after talking to a clolleage with a variable machine, he explained that our health insurance plan normaly doesnt reimburse the variable machine. It took him many weeks and many medical documents before they agreed to pay for the machine.

Do you think its worth it to argue for Variable machine or should I settle for the constant pressure machine?

NOTE: There is something else that I need to tell you guyz. Upon recommendation, I quit eating anything that contains Gluten exactly 7 days ago and I feel much much better. My energy level is back 75%, I fall asleep quickly and I wake up feeling more rested. I still have bruising around the eyes however and need drops in the moring. BTW: I am not on a diet, I eat a lot of junk still(chips, candy, chocolate, cheese, soda, milk etc...) Just cutting all of the Gluten made a HUGE difference. I have more enrgy, I feel lighter, more alert and in a better mood even. Downside is that I spend a lot of time reading ingredient labels because gluten is in a lot of products.

I hope that combined with my CPAP machine, I will feel close to 100%

RE: Zero improvement with CPAP
You should contact your insurance company and discuss your specific situation with the APAP prescription your doctor wrote. There could have been different issues with your friend. Don't mention that you also have a script for the CPAP.

Most people here feel the auto machine is very valuable in finding the most effective pressure, even if they eventually set it to run at a fixed pressure.
if you can't decide then you don't have enough data.

RE: Zero improvement with CPAP
remember. an apap can be put in cpap mode or apap mode. a cpap can only do cpap. so if you do better with a straight pressure, apap will do it, but if you feel better with variable, cpap will not deliver. Also - all apaps have data capability, while cpap may or may not according to specific model.

RE: Zero improvement with CPAP
I would suggest that you argue the point with your insurance. They will only replace a machine every 5 years and if the constant pressure one does not work for you then you are stuck. The variable machine can do constant AND variable so either way you are good for a while.

RE: Zero improvement with CPAP

Your insurance uses the same billing code for CPAP or APAP. They will pay the same amount whether you get a CPAP or APAP. The DME/Supplier is the one who would be happy to give you a CPAP, as they make more profit that way. Don't believe anything the DME tells you.

Call your insurance, tell them you have a script. for an APAP, ask what coverage you have, and how much if any will you have to pay.

This! ^^

Assuming you are in the U.S. your insurance plan probably reimburses a supplier based on HCPCS codes. A dumb CPAP with no data, a fixed CPAP with data, and an Auto CPAP with data are all the same for insurance purposes. Since an Auto CPAP can do fixed CPAP, and will provide data for you to see your treatment efficacy, the answer to your question is simple...get the Auto CPAP.
