The "Auto" Aspect of ResMed S10 AirSense AutoSet

Question
The "Auto" Aspect of ResMed S10 AirSense AutoSet
Hi guys! I am looking at buying my first CPAP machine and while the ResMed S10 caught my eye, I'm a little fuzzy on its performance. Specifically, I am interested in a machine that auto adjusts based on my breathing, but the documentation for the ResMed S10 seems to indicate that its "auto ramp" functionality is purely to sit at a low pressure while awake, then progress to the "prescribed" pressure once I have fallen asleep.

I am currently using a DreamStation (as a loaner from a local company) which allows you to enter a minimum pressure and a maximum pressure, and then varies the pressure based on how your breathing is going. This is ideal and I am unclear as to whether the ResMed S10 does the same or not. Can anyone verify this for me?

For those of you bored enough to still be reading, the general background is that my sleep apnoea is due to my weight, and therefore is subject to change as I gain or lose weight, which is why my sleep specialist recommended an auto CPAP to me. For this reason I am also intensely interested in obtaining the data from my CPAP machine that will tell me the variations in pressure it used throughout the night in the hopes that one day, when I lose weight, I will know when I no longer need my CPAP machine.

So I am also open to suggestions if anyone loves their CPAP machine and feel that it fits my criteria. :-)

Thanks in advance to everyone taking the time to respond, I appreciate the help.

TL;DR: Does the ResMed S10 auto adjust its pressure based on each breath?

Yes, it is an autoPAP.

The "treatment pressure" it mentions is the treatment range.

And few if any autoPAPs adjust the pressure based on each breath. They actually adjust pressure after sensing an event (be that narrowing or complete closure) in order to prevent the next one. Adjusting pressure after each breath would be annoying as heck.

Hi LordPeanut and welcome to ApneaBoard! A good place to get answers from other users.

The machine you are referring to is called ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet or shortformed to A10 (not S10), and is ResMed's newest Auto CPAP machine. It will function basically the same as the DreamStation you have by Respironics. The ramp is just a comfort feature that a lot of CPAPer's do not use.

I'm sure someone more experience than me will chime in with more detailed information for you. Good luck with your therapy!

Hi LordPeanut and welocme
Absolutely and also try to pre-empt apnea by increase pressure in response to snoring and flow limitation which are early signs of obstructive apnea (not central apnea). When the machine detect central apnea, responds appropriately by not increasing pressure

For now, we haven't found a software works with DeamStation and SleepHead doesn't supported it yet
AirSense 10 Autoset supported by SleepyHead and ResScan software
Good luck

RE: The "Auto" Aspect of ResMed S10 AirSense AutoSet
G'day LordPeanut, welcome to Apnea Board.

As Cate and Paula have already said, the Resmed Autoset is an auto-titrating machine which adjusts pressure automatically depending on certain parameters. In this respect it is very similar to the Dreamstation you're using now. There are a number of other brands on the market (eg Fisher & Paykel, De Vilbis etc) but Philips Respironics and ResMed are by far the most popular.

The autoset type machines work by setting a maximum and minimum therapy pressure. When the machine detects an apnea, hypopnea (partial closure of the airway), snoring or flow limitation, it will raise the pressure to prevent a recurrence of the event. If another event happens, it will raise the pressure some more, up to the maximum. However, if no further events occur, it will gradually reduce the pressure again. So a graph of pressure v time looks a bit like a sawtooth. The amount the pressure is raised and the rate at which it reduces again is defined by proprietary algorithms developed by each company.

The ramp you mention is a comfort feature, where the pressure starts very low when you first mask up, then gradually increases to the minimum therapy pressure. A lot of people turn it off once they're used to the therapy.

Most manufacturers have some sort of on-line service where you can review a summary of your data - on the latest machines it's automatically uploaded via the cellular network. While this data can give you a general indication of progress, to really get at the nuts & bolts you need to use software like SleepyHead, available here: http://www.sleepfiles.com/SH2/

Good luck choosing your machine. Come back often to let us know your progress and ask any questions.

Good luck. Personally I wouldn't buy a new machine, masks, or anything locally, too pricey for me ... YMMV
Even with the exchange rate and shipping costs, still a lot less than local prices but a different matter if one have insurance cover CPAP

Haha, no, definitely not buying locally. I purchased a "gently used" one from the US. Much cheaper. :-)
