[Treatment] AHI humidity and temperature
#1
AHI humidity and temperature
I am on the second week ever of APAP use with Resmed Airsense 10. AHI had lowered below 2 for some recent night. Last nigh, congested with a cold I upped humidity from 2 (reduced because of excess moisture) back to three. And I increased temperature from 73 to 80 as my specialist said upping those together would not cause moisture to return.

My AHI spiked a bit. I was woken up by one of my boys and read AHI 10 when awake; then managed 3 hours more sleep and its dropped to 6.7 by morning. Pressure ramp up was only slightly higher around 12 instead of 11.8.

Could this be caused by changes to humidity and temperature? Or is it more likely related to an air leak or added congestion from my cold? I may try returning to the previous setting tonight though I think higher humidity could help chronic problems with congestion and the cold symptoms in particular.

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Most likely it's related to the cold. You'd have to break down the event types and maybe post some data for anyone to narrow it down. It wouldn't surprise me to see AHI higher with congestion, especially clear-air events.

The congestion probably resulted in more obstruction. Nasal and sinuses passages become inflamed and swollen.
I prefer as much humidity as I can get without rainout.

The pressure difference between 11.8 and 12 is in the noise.

Thank you. Is AHI spike on single nights an unusual event? What is the most important measure I should pay attention to ? AHI, AI or Central AI? I would like to stick with higher humidity because of congestion but don't want to repeat last night's numbers. Thanks for your advice.

An AHI spike is normal. At this point in your therapy, don't worry about anything other than letting your mind and body get use to the new sleeping conditions. It may take awhile or you could take to it right away. . . no two people are the same. Just relax and enjoy your dreams! You can worry about the numbers later.
