Weight Gain From Water Retention

Weight Gain From Water Retention
I took delivery of a new machine recently and have been sleeping tubed up for twelve days. Compared with my previous experience in 2008 with xPAP, this time I'm responding better. There isn't an issue with leaks like before and I'm sleeping better and longer throughout the night. Before using the machine I would wake up numerous times, and get up and use the bathroom frequently. Though I'm still sometimes feeling tired and sleepy throughout the day, I am getting a good degree of improvement, enough that I can say the machine is working.

However, after the 12 days I have gained six pounds and I feel bloated. My diet hasn't changed so water retention seems to be the reason for the weight gain. Not only am I not emptying the bladder during the night, but there are less bathroom visits throughout the day. I took a diuretic today and I dropped 4 pounds.
I have a follow-up visit with the sleep doctor in two weeks and the water retention issue is definitely going to be discussed. My wife and I are somewhat concerned about this and the long term affects of edema. Therefore, we would like to get feedback from anyone who suffers from this and may have received medical attention and/or an opinion (other than being prescribed a diuretic) regarding water retention and xPAP therapy.

The internist I saw at the hospital said it was common in his experience for people starting CPAP theory to drop a lot of weight by losing water, not gaining it.

That didn't happen to me but I haven't gained anything either. I guess we are all different and CPAP affects some differently than others. Do you have edema and are you on prescription diuretics for it? If you are not showing obvious edema then I would be a bit suspicious of your reasoning - you are doing the right thing to see your doctor.

No the diuretic I took today was my wife's. I don't take any pills accept a very occasional Glucophage. I never have had an issue with edema. But my wife reminded me that in 2008 when I was on xPAP for about a month, I also had water retention issues, which was among the different reasons I stopped using the machine. Not that I'm going to drop the machine now but I need to get this evaluated pronto since it can be serious.

Thanks!

It can be serious and you should see your doctor as quick as you reasonably can, I agree. On the other hand it isn't, by itself, likely to kill you in a day or two.

Be careful taking any pills that aren't prescribed for you. They might turn out to be just the opposite of what you really need.

That's a 10-4. I have no intentions in continuous self-prescribing but I did take one today out of desperation... I was major bloated, even breathing was difficult when I bent over.
And that's why I posted this issue cause two weeks to see the doctor is agonizing.

Thanks!

Look very carefully at your diet. I was gaining and dropping as much as 8 pounds within a day or two. I started tracking what I was eating. My doctor said that because I have a very low salt diet (blood tests - I'm reminded regularly to eat more salt), when there is salt added to an item, my body is overreacting and it mostly does this when the weather is hot. So, prior to seeing your doctor, write down every single thing you are eating. It will help him to rule out some things while addressing edema. I definitely have it in my legs, but it really is only a problem when my ankles swell because it pinches a nerve (ow!).

Note: I have a low salt diet not because I have to, but because I got into the habit as a caregiver first for grandmother, then great aunt, then dad and brother, all of whom HAD to have low salt diets because they had salt sensitive high blood pressure.

Please note: if you only have edema in one limb, see doctor immediately as that is a potential indicator of a blood clot.

I have had this issue - and more like 10 to 15 lbs than 5. I got lung xrays, heart workup etc and docs didn't find anything that worried them. My doc upped my diuretic, and that helped a *little* What helped more was raising EPR to 3 - after I found an article about how the increased thoracic pressure of PAP decreases venous return and how Bipap did not have this issue. Moving me to bipap is under discussion.

Tongue Suck Technique for prevention of mouth breathing:
  • Place your tongue behind your front teeth on the roof of your mouth
  • let your tongue fill the space between the upper molars
  • gently suck to form a light vacuum

Practising during the day can help you to keep it at night

Yes, diet is very important when there is the issue of edema. At my house I am the cook, and since my wife is on a low sodium diet for her kidney's, I sparingly use salt. When I buy food outside the home, we taste test first, or outright refuse food that is highly salted. As of my last physical... I have no issues other than a slight blood sugar elevation that can be controlled by diet (and weight loss).
There is something else at play here... I was hoping to find something out as I count the days before my doctor's visit.

Thanks for your input... LOU

If it were me I'd have gone to the emergency ward of the nearest hospital right quick.

When I discovered that I had edema in my legs I went to a local walk in clinic, which we have here in British Columbia and, it being after 6p.m. on a Friday night he recommended that I go to the Emergency department, as the hospital could do tests on a weekend that he couldn't get until Monday. I was there for four hours and multiple tests and sent home with a prescription for Furosemide (Lasix) and a couple of pills to keep me for the weekend, and a quick appointment with a specialist in internal medicine.
