As long as you are tolerating your pressure of 11, monitoring your data to see if your therapy is effective, and making adjustments to the pressure as needed, I don't see any advantage to having an auto machine.
On the other hand, if you had a higher pressure and weren't tolerating it well, an auto machine would allow you to spend more time at lower pressures.

Ok, so I was doing really well on my fixed pressure of 11, however for the past 4 months, I have been having pretty bad panic attacks and it is affecting my sleep. I'm waking every 2 hours (although I must stress NOT from having a panic attack). I'm not quite sure what to do about my pressure though - I'm still getting good readings, anywhere between 0.3 and 1.5 but waking up constantly like I did before the therapy started, so this is why I am wondering about getting an auto to help regulate my sleeping a bit more

weeble, you could pick up an Auto machine for about a third of the pick over the net rather than getting a new one on private health insurance, I'm with Bupa and only get 20% back anyway. My CPAP and mask cost $2500 and I got $500 back. Now that I know what I'm doing, next time I will buy over the net. I do prefer an auto machine for the comfort factor, why be at 11 all night if you can be at 4 for some of it. I'm not sure it will help you awakenings. Do you get straight back to sleep when you wake up?

Well, perhaps 11 is not uncomfortable! I used to find it uncomfortable but now it feels perfectly normal.
Plus, if you're at 4 the only way you'll get to 11 is by having apneas and hypopneas, which could disturb your sleep.

I agree. I think the awakenings are a result of a life-long adaptation to OSA. The only way to get them to fade away is to recondition ourselves by using the CPAP machine every time we sleep.

I got my last one online from the states. Was under $500 so was extremely happy with that. (My first one from Australia cost me $1800.) I will be getting an autoset from the same online supplier. I totally agree with you about being at a constant of 11 all night when it can be lower or higher for some of it. Yes I do go straight back to sleep however, when I eventually get up, I feel like I haven't slept at all..just like b4 the therapy started. 
Sleepster, when I started my therapy, I actually did well sleeping, then when the pressure was changed to 11, I did really well with no waking up (that I was concious of), no more panda eyes!! I always use the machine when I sleep. So 11 worked great for me...now not so good. I really do think an autoset will help - without the need for CONSTANT sleep studies because of the fact that my specialist doesn't recommend auto machines (autos mean less studies which means less money!!)

Initially, I was given a Resmed S9 Elite with pressure set at 12. For 2 years, my sleep quality was miserable and I was waking up every 1 1/2 to 2 hours. I finally got my doc to write a script for a Resmed S9 Auto Set with pressure setting of 12 to 20. I have learned that my pressure is 95% of the time at 19.9. I saw my sleep doc yesterday and I am getting another sleep study and he said that if my pressure on a regular autoset cpap goes to 16 that he is instructing them to try a bipap on me. FINALLY, someone listened to what I was telling them. After my first sleep study, I asked for a CPAP machine that would give me a range of pressure just in case (with a spouse that was not well health-wise, I did not have anyone that would be able to notice changes in my breathing, etc.) and I was denied by the sleep study center and according to the doc I saw yesterday, was really an error on their part as writing a script for an auto set wouldn't have been a big issue and it might have saved me 2 years of no improvement in my sleep quality. As it stands right now, I do sleep a little bit longer than I did before (3 to 4 hours before I wake up and a lot of times when I wake up, it is b/c the darn Velcro come loose) but I still take a nap almost daily unless I have a doctor appointment. Yesterday, I was so sleepy that I could not drive to my eye doctor appointment. So, I am happy to be getting this 2nd sleep study and I hope that they will pay more attention to what I told the doc. I do NOT plan on taking Xanax prior to my sleep study because I have a concern as to whether Xanax can cause me to have more events and my goal is to see what events that I have that medication doesn't cause. HOpe this makes sense.

Not just ResMed, Phillips Repironcis, Fisher Paykel and even Chinese made set prices artificially high in Australia. In Australia, makes no difference whether you buy your machine from bricks and mortar stores or on-line, you,ll be ripped-off. While in US there is huge difference between on-line and stores (DME) prices, different health care system but that another topic.
All machines/appliances comes with a manual, explain how to operate the machine and troubleshoot problems except CPAP machines ... they remove the manuals before handing out the machines so you have come back to them even to change the time on your S9. I can see it now, every S9 user running to their suppliers to change the clock to daylight saving which started last Sunday
They call it customer service ... its a slavery ... who said slavery been abolished. Shame on them all especially ResMed because this company benefited from the scientific research in machine development by the scientists in Sydney universities which are funded by Australian tax payers

Zonk, well said.It is incredibly unfair that we have to pay so much. I've been in touch with a supplier in the states. A new S9 auto is just under $800US, a slightly used one, under $500US, even with a really bad exchange rate, it still works out well over 1/2 the price of a new one here. If I remember rightly, when I bought my elite, I ordered it on a Wed or Thurs and received it the following Monday. I was extremely impressed.
Kmar92, if you can, purchase your machine from one of the suppliers listed on the forums (I personally use Supplier #2). I bought my masks off of ebay (from an american seller) they were under $100AU

Supplier #10 ship to Australia too, their prices are reasonable, stock masks parts and other supplies ( Supplier #2 don,t sell separate mask parts)
