Why is a prescription required?

RE: Why is a prescription required?
There is no prescription required here in Australia, which is the home of CPAP. I haven't seen any evidence of widespread abuses or epidemics of side effects. What I have seen is that Resmed (originally an Australian company) charges us twice as much for the same machine sold in the US. Philips of course follow suit. This has led to an influx Chinese machines such as BMC. Are they good or bad? I don't know, and I guess time will tell.

Without insurance and govt involvement, you get a free-for-all. If you think the open market would do otherwise go purchase yourself some hearing aids. That racket is worse than buying a used vehicle!

Tongue Suck Technique for prevention of mouth breathing:
  • Place your tongue behind your front teeth on the roof of your mouth
  • let your tongue fill the space between the upper molars
  • gently suck to form a light vacuum

Practising during the day can help you to keep it at night

Daria with all due respect, defferfence, and a bowed head , lol. What area is government involved in, or has been in the past, where they did not make a royal mess of whatever it sticks its fingers in??

Docs want paid , sleep study labs want paid, dmes want paid.
The cpap arena is money scheme. AMA lobbies, gov requires, Docs get money, labs get money, DMEs get money, patients get handrd the cheapest machinr the DME csn trick them into, autos set uselessly wide open, then sent home to fair for themselves.

If this wasnt the case this forum wouldnt exist.

RE: Why is a prescription required?
When I called my DME yesterday to inquire as to weather they had the Resmed AirSense 10 for Her, I informed her that I set my pressure from 12 to 12.8 because it was more comfortable. She scolded me and said that the doctor is the only one who can raise it. I told her that I raised it and it is more comfortable and I am getting better sleep. I assumed she wanted the doctor to raise it to generate an office visit.

She also said they don't. supply the Resmed for her and I said would she please get one. She said she would have to talk to her manager. I guess we don't have any say in what we want.

I've never seen a sleep doctor actually change a pressure. They order the DME to do it; and the DME tries to do it out of sight so that you will not know how to enter the secret menu. My personal policy is: I don't tell them. Nor, do they touch my machine because I own it -- paid for it out of pocket.

Stupid people need to be restricted in what they are allowed to do.

Ignorant people only need education. Education is what you get with this forum.

Lazy people that are ignorant and do not help themselves are classed with the stupid ones. That is ok with them it requires no work.

I'm in Canada where the Fear Of Government syndrome is not so virulent and I can think of lots of things. Here in B.C. the Government does many things well or at least they did until the current crew got in.

B.C. Hydro when it was run by the Government gave us the cheapest and most reliable and greenest electricity on the continent, now being ruined by the current "liberal" crew. The Government ferry service was fast, efficient, and even friendly until some clown decided to "privatize" it. Now it costs a lot more for much worse service.

The whole interstate highway system in the USA was built by the Federal government under that terrible socialist, Dwight D. Eisenhower. In the 1960's the US government put men on the moon. And the technology developed for that lead to cheap home computers and the internet which was originally started by the government.

Is it so hard to comprehend that some things are run better by Government and some by the private sector? There are quite a few things that government shouldn't do, but there are some it should do.

And of course every dollar in your pocket was created by the Federal Treasury. Maybe we should give everybody the power to create their own money, what could go wrong with that.....?

Protecting stupid people perpetuates the genetic trait.

If a second hand or reconditioned unit is within your budget, give it a go.

Plenty of good advice on the site, probably of more use than that from the medics/quacks who from my experience are next to ******* useless.
