AlanE,
Thanks for the info. Sure enough these little buggers were sitting in my "to be upgraded" list. It looks like M$ isn't going to give up.

What was the update number that put GWX.exe on W7 machines?
I dodged that update on one machine. On another machine, I turned off the daily nag screen by deleting the task in taskmanager.
But, I still get that ugly billboard on the update screen. I'd like to uninstall that update, then hide it.

KB3035583 - They repackaged it because so many people had turned off.

Also, there seems to be another one named KB3083710 which is full of Windows Update programs.

RE: Windows 10
Hi,
I know it's been ages since the last post on this thread but I thought that it was worth adding a comment on my Windows 10 experiences.
W10 was only provided in Australia a couple of months ago. I've now updated three notebooks and two tablets to W10. The first one went so well I decided that it couldn't be too bad for my primary notebook so I gave it a try. After a couple of weeks and a new hard drive I finally have W10 operating at an "acceptable" level and have had to re-install all programs and restore the documents that I had backed up. This update to W10 is the reason that I am back here - I need to re-download and re-install Rescan. My secondary notebook spat the dummy altogether so I reverted to W7 and find it much more stable for that particular machine.

The tablets have all updated without any problems and are running better than ever. It appears that W10 has been designed for the tablets rather than the notebooks as both tablets are still running so much better than on w8.

I guess in hindsight I would not be updating until W10 could guarantee a smoother update pathway. I won't be so quick to install the next version. It appears that the individual PC specs are what needs to be considered before updating any given machine. I'm not prepared to update my wife's notebook until M$ can give some sort of guarantee that it will all work nice and smoothly.

RE: Windows 10
My Sony Vaio laptop tried, without success, to update to Win 10 before I caught it. I was curious why it erred out, so I went to the Sony website and there, in bold letters, they stated not to upgrade until further notice. I lucked out on that one.

Windows Can Natively Track Your Lost PC - "...You can also tell Windows 10 to periodically send your device’s location to Microsoft’s servers, allowing you (and I'm sure all of M$) to view its last known location if you ever lose it."
