RE: Need help reading husband sleep study results
(06-08-2013, 10:07 AM)TBlizz Wrote: I picked up my husband sleep study report yesterday and he would've never even imagined he had sleep apnea. He only had the sleep study because my Sleep Specialist told him while he was with me at my appointment that he needed to be tested for it because of how he was breathing. It reads Overall apnea/hypopnea index 35.5/hour
REM AHI 24/hour
1 Central Apnea
2 Obstructive Apneas
214 Obstructive Hypopneas
Limb Movement 105, with index of17.2/hour
Supine Position REM 90/hour

How good or Bad are his results?

TBlizz, your husbands is servere, you divide the 214by the number of hours slept so his was 214/6 hours = 35.5 per hour, during REM sleep or our deepest sleep it was 24.
He may also have PLMD - periodic limb movement disorder, basically his limbs move when he is asleep normally his legs slightly kicking. I have it, it is caused from not enough oxygen to the brain from the sleep apnea. I should inprove once he is on CPAP for a while, they can give him meds for it, I didn't take them and would rather just wait for the CPAP to kick in. At least you two have something in common and I'm sure you can teach him things from what you have learnt. How are you going? better I hope.

I've been on Cpap for 14 years now. It's the greatest; don't get discouraged! I'm just now retiring my Resmed Autoset T that I've had since 2000 with 30000 hrs on it even though it's still working fine.I'm replacing it with a Resmed Autoset S-9. Hang in there!

Wow, Lambtron, 14 years on one CPAP machine... that's got to be some sort of record!

Thumbs-up-2

I think you'll be happy with an S9 AutoSet... that machine will be light-years ahead of your old AutoSet T.

Welcome, Lambtron, well done, I have only been on CPAP for a bit over 2 years but love it and love my S9 Autoset, I actually hhave named her, her name is 'Silvie' a bit obvious re the colour. Silvie is the best, she never complains, keeps me alive, and all she wants is some electricity and a bit of distilled water, what more could a man ask for, anyway good luck with the upgrade. You may want to start getting familar with the softwaer that is now available that probably wasn't when you first started out. We can now take a lot of decisions into our own hands if that is what we want to do.

MY CPAP STORY-MY LIFE HAS NEVER BEEN BETTER
Hello! I just joined the group. I have browsed before and finally decided to be a part . I have been on cpap for about 2 years now. I cant express enough how much it has changed my life. Before cpap I always slept during day, tired all the time, irritable, snored like a train, had a drowsy mood all the time. then the worst thing ever happened. I started having panic attacks! I wouldn't wish em on anybody. waking up with a feeling of dying, hyperventalating, extreme anxiety, head ache. at this point I new I needed to see a doctor. I have no insurance, so this kept me away. I self diagnosed thru internet research, then talking to a coulple people I knew. they convinced me I needed cpap. I was willing to see doctor, and in the process of selling items and anything I had to do to be able to afford the approximate 3500.00 for it all. Then a friend at church heard about it and offered me his wifes machine. she would not use it, hated it, gave it terrible reviews. it was free for the taking, and with the panic attacks not ceasing , I would try anything. it came with nasal mask. I had no idea what I was doing. I started with low pressure and started up. and up, and up, I nearly blew my ears out. couldn't breathe , was worse than before I started. I couldn't use nose mask, I have deviated septum and stopped up nose usually. luckily a friend who is a nurse brought me a full mask from the hospital. I tried again, it was working, but very uncomfortable, actually gave me a panicky feeling. as if I couldn't breathe. I didn't think this was going to work. I had such high hopes, and now I felt if maybe this wasn't gonna work. However I forced myself to stick it out with pressure of 4. the next morning I was great. I noticed I didn't even get up to go to the bathroom. I was shocked and convinced this was the cure. it wasn't always easy to get to sleep, and i didn't know if it was working the best it could. then I started feeling o.k., I was getting adjusted. I worked my way up to 7 then 10 then 12. then I was great, I mean great ,wonderful. I thought lets go more for blisfullness, well , that didn't work. the higher I went was worse. I tried in small increments, but sleep was worse and didn't feel as good. I went back to 12 and that's where im at today.I am a living testament that cpap therapy is a life changer. It was definitely God sent and im thankful to him for it. I don't nap anymore(most of the time)I don't get up 3 times during the night to go to the bathroom.(I cant remember the last time I got up for that). I don't snore(my wife loves me more now, no ear plugs)I have the energy of a young bull(almost) im 47. I get up early and out of bed every morning no matter what.( used to could sleep on and on, especialy wnen wake up time arrived).I am healthier and happier than ive ever been .its that great, and that wonderful.and best of all .....no more panic attacks. and that is the honest truth.I upgraded to a Quattro full mask now. yes everyone I am a cpap bootlegger, or should say a bootlegee!! and am proud of it. some of us would never be able to live a quality life if it weren't for the used equipment out there. I know some wouldn't be comfortable doing what I did,(adjusting pressures etc.) but ive always been somewhat of a risk taker.and I dont really see it as a risk at all. if it was, the payoff was a millionfold.I am so grateful to God and to all the people who helped me get to this stage in life. thanks to all the people of this forum(I read it quite a bit while I was finding my way).it is an extremely valuable tool. God bless all of you from the bottom of my heart!!If I offer any advice to any novice , is to not be afraid to tri it(cpap therapy). if you snore , feel tired ,nap all the time etc,.if you can, definitely see a doctor for therapy. if you cant afford like me, pick up a good used one and try it. it could change your life. thanks again happy dreams!!!!!

That's a great story. Panic attacks are a serious issue and I agree that CPAP therapy can be a cure.

Have you tried looking at your data to try and optimize your therapy?

Thanks for reply. yes and no to your question. at first I did pay attention to my ahi. I would always wake up and check. sometimes it would be around 5 and sometimes much higher. my mask was leaking a lot then, so I didn't pay the numbers a lot of attention.the mask I have now leaks less. I have the epr on 2. I just go by feel. however I am in the market for a s9 autoset. I would like to be able to check my data more accurately. also see if I have csa's.I have heard a lot of great things about apaps. I want to get one, and have my existing equipment for travel and backup. I missed one for 450.00 recently. I do wake up during the night multiple times, but still feel refreshed in the morning. I feel as if im getting plenty of good sleep. but maybe the autoset can still find improvement. thanks again,,,,,,,,,
