Your Personal CPAP Success Story - Post Here

Training wheels
Well, so the journey begins. Having been diagnosed with severe apnoea, I am now hooked up to a box of plastic and a hose. Having served 23 years in the Army and now retired medically, I am surprised that I was not diagnosed earlier. I suppose soldiers are always tired and that's no excuse for not being able to do your job. My wife and I have battled with my sleep condition for years and only just now we can confidently go to bed and I will not feel guilty for keeping her awake. The flow on affects of my bad sleep do not stop at the bedroom. The tired and angry people who emerge from the bedroom are intolerant of others which makes for a very unhappy house.
I am looking forward to my journey with the vision of being able to wake refreshed and not be back asleep in the afternoons. I, strangely enough are excited and look forward to going to bed and hooking up, just so I can read the stats on my machine the next morning. To all the other hose heads on this page, Sleep-well and Thanks for your insight and helpful comments.

Welcome to the hose heads club. May your journey towards CPAP go well. For me it took about a month before I had more good days than bad. Some people adjust much faster, some much slower, and everywhere in between.

Welcome pmottram, it's great to hear such a positive story. Keep up the good work, it will continue to get even better, if you can believe that.

Hi TassieJeff, welcome aboard

True words well spoken Zonk. However not sure if my romantic life will take a dramatic turn south after seeing myself with the Darth Vader gear on. Dielaughing

No worries there mate. I've been admittedly absent from this board for about a year and a half... And in that time I've been separated, divorced, and now engaged, and none of it because of the Darth Vader sleepers. :-D My new fiancée had only one question about it... "What do I press to get it off you when I need a kiss?"

I was more than happy to demonstrate. :-D

Congratulations CHanlon! Hope you will be very happy, the three of you.
Sounds as though you have been travelling well with cpap throughout all of this, so that has to be good as well.
Good luck for your future.

I'm one of those lucky people... I've never had a major issue with cpap, other than having to fight my MD on giving me an apap rather than fixed cpap. Slept 9 hours straight the very first time I put on a mask (using apap, hence the fight when he tried to take it away) and felt awake for the first time in years. Haven't looked back.

New on here. Don't know what I am doing, but I started my therapy three years ago this month, and I have not missed one night of using the cpap all night long. Had no trouble getting used to you. I think it is a mental thing. I just decided before I started I was going to get use to it and did. Feel less tired. I would miss it if I had to go a night without it.

Good job, rstroudmsdwc, on not missing in 3 years (I am on the early part of that success as well so 3 years is a good example for me to follow.)

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on three years well done.
That is an excellent track record. I also have just started on my journey and I hope I will be able to look back in three years and tell a story like yours.
Thanks for sharing with us.

Thanks to all who submit their stories as I feel it is important to support us newbies to this what feels to me like becoming a cyborg with all the head gear we have to wear to bed and being plugged into the power pointRolleyes.

Anyway, my story...
I got diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea OSA around a year ago, after asking my doctor how to please find resolve from Head Trauma from Motor Vehicle Accident from back in Oct 2006. The Sleep Apnea Specialist encouraged me to go do some of my own research, as she knew I would anyway. Too young for this.. Oh-jeez (my doctor recently admitted that MVA may have brought Sleep Apnea on).

With my research I found a book online titled "Cure your sleep apnea without CPAP", containing some invaluable research. I also received treatment from Osteopath and Bowen Therapist. The sleep apnea exercises helped for a while and taking 5HTP reduced my day time sleepiness for a time.

Unfortunately I didn't stick to the exercises or the treatments. Being forgetful, declining income and energy levels, then my husband and I separated for a year, which really had me floundering.

My husband and I are back together now, since we have both taken a new approach to the challenges we are both presented with now.

Long and short of the history lesson. I have now finally made the decision to commit to the CPAP program. Ultimately, hopefully when my energy levels return I intend to do the sleep apnea exercises regularly and hopefully ultimately find sleep apnea to be a thing of the past. Just a bit exhausted to date to do much else.

I have been on CPAP now for around 3 weeks.

Side effect is that I am swallowing air, fortunately our bodies ultimately expel, on the bright side and on the funny side in the mornings, I haven't blown the porcelain off the wall yet. Okay

All the head gear takes some getting used to. Thus my thoughts on feeling as though I have become a cyborg! Though it is not as bad as I first imagined it to be. If it helps, it is definitely worth it.

I am currently using a Philips Respironics , with a Wisp mask. The Wisp Mask is light and reasonably comfortable, compared to the others I tried on. The machine is quiet, though you can hear the air flow. I actually use the rhythm of the air flow to meditate off to sleep ultimately, which works for me.

My husband has been a wonderful emotional support since we got back together and is great support in my wearing the CPAP gear. He has also got the gear we need for me to travel with my CPAP in our Camper Trailer.

Note that I have slept with the CPAP from the time I go to bed, until after sunrise in the morning, which even surprises myself.

Amazing what happens when you set your mind to something! Smile

Will keep you posted on my progress in future.. Sleep-well
