chronic sinus problems and ringing ears

chronic sinus problems and ringing ears
Shortly after beginning to use my cpap machine, I started to have sinus problems, ringing ears. I've been on antibiotics on two occasions, no relief. I've been using the machine for six months, this ringing needs to end. Has anyone had similar problems? Any input would be greatly appreciated, Thanks JIM

Sounds like you need to visit an ENT specialist and find out what's happening.

RE: chronic sinus problems and ringing ears
I would definitely consult an ENT as tinnitus (ringing in ears) can be indicative of several conditions. The sinus congestion may be helped by tweaking your humidity a bit and coming up with a nasal hygiene routine throughout the day. For example, I use my Flonase when I wake up, then ayr saline nasal gel with aloe, and simply saline nasal spray throughout the day to keep things moving. Good luck to you!

Which drugs have you used since a few months before starting CPAP therapy?

I think CPAP pressure can, in rare cases, cause or contribute to balance problems and hearing problems. For example, see this thread: http://www.apneaboard.com/forums/Thread-...780#pid780

But I would like to bring attention to another cause of deafness, tinnitus and/or vertigo. It is drugs which are ototoxic (toxic to the inner ear).

Especially, some antibiotics can cause permanent hearing and balance problems in some people, even if taken for only a few days. Some can render the inner ear more susceptible to damage from loud noises or from other causes for up to six months after no longer taking it, producing increased vulnerability to damaged hearing from loud noises or whatever.

A pdf version of the book "Ototoxic Drugs Exposed, 3rd Edition" by Neil G Bauman is available for purchase from Amazon and lists thousands of common drugs which are potentially devastating on some people's hearing or balance. (Everyone is different; most people might not be hurt a bit, but some will have terrible side affects.)

Personallly, I never start a new prescription without researching it in his book. He classifies ototoxic drugs into 5 risk classes, with Class 5 being the worst.

Years ago I used daily Neosporin (available "over the counter" without a prescription, also marketed as "Triple Antibiotic") to combat ear itch from wearing hearing aids which had been touched with unwashed hands. (I would touch a door knob or something, and some time later would adjust the volume on my hearing aids without washing my hands first, so my ears would occasionally itch from exposure to "whatever".) Now I suffer from constant, extremely loud tinnitus, which I never associated with my use of the antibiotic until after finding out about the book. Neosporin contains Neomycin, which is a Class 5 (worst) risk, according to the book.

One would think that if a drug is not safe then it wouldn't be used, but the drug companies have an incentive to keep drug clinical trials as small as they can get away with, to reduce likelihood that someone will have a very bad reaction which would delay government approval of the new drug. Also, some clinical trials did not even ask about affects on hearing or balance, so the bad effects some people had were not adequately tracked or reported.

I was dealing with a similar issue, with one ear ringing so loudly I could hardly hear above it. I started using Xlear nasal spray, and it is really helping. I use it 2x per day... morning and night, and as long as I do that my ears stay clear, and my sinus issues are greatly relieved.

Xlear is just a mild saline with xylitol added. There are recipes online for making your own nasal rinse, and I have the main ingredients on the way. ( xylitol, GSE. I already have a variety of salts )

Why use xylitol nasal rinse?

Tongue Suck Technique for prevention of mouth breathing:
  • Place your tongue behind your front teeth on the roof of your mouth
  • let your tongue fill the space between the upper molars
  • gently suck to form a light vacuum

Practising during the day can help you to keep it at night

RE: chronic sinus problems and ringing ears
I too experienced ringing of the ears but have a long story. I used a CPAP for about 18 months. My AHI was 25 when it was discovered I had sleep apnea. Apparently, I had it for years. My symptoms where severe ringing, light headed-ness, migranes, insomnia, and some vision problems. Well, the CPAP helped relieve everything but did not cure the ringing and the discomfort for sleeping. I had an MRI to check for tumors and none were found. The doc diagnosed me with tinnitus and mentioned there was no cure. All I can say is that the CPAP reduced the severity of the ringing but did not eliminated.

Well, then I tried an oral appliance but that did not work. But last July, I had a UPPP and lingual tonsillectomy surgery. Three months post-op, I only had an AHI of 1 in my last sleep study. Thereafter, I stopped using the CPAP and the ringing gradually went away. I also have a deviated septum but have not had any operation on it. So far it is 9 months since the surgery and I am ok so far and not using CPAP. I realize surgery isn't for everyone but if you are not overweight, then it is something to consider. An experienced surgeon would recommend which type of surgeries may work for you. For myself, I had no other option (in my early 30s and exercise frequently throughout my life). It was either wear a machine for the rest of my life or roll the dice with surgery. Hope this story is helpful.

Jim, I see you use nasal pillows... Do you also use a chinstrap by chance?
