colonoscopy with severe sleep apnea?
Since I found out I had severe sleep apnea, I worried about any upcoming surgeries, knowing I was not a good surgical candidate. I'm supposed to have a colonoscopy in 2017 and am now worried about the 'conscious sedation' that they give you for the procedure. Has anyone else out there with severe apnea had a colonoscopy? Were special provisions made? How did it go?
Thanks to anyone who takes the time to alleviate (or reinforce) my concerns. I want to proceed armed with knowledge. Sleepytimegal

Many threads cover this topic: https://www.google.com/search?q=colonosc...8&oe=utf-8
The short story is, don't worry about it. When your anesthesiologist or anesthesiology technician asks if you have sleep apnea, just be honest, but again don't worry about it. Your vital signs will be monitored, and sometimes a lighter anesthesia will be used. The lighter levels of anesthesia used in colonoscopy in particular mean it is generally not an issue, and it is unlikely you should bring the CPAP in for recovery. Good luck.

I did. They used Profofol and actually put me under.
Not a problem. Profofol wears off within minutes of the anesthesiologist stopping the push on the plunger. I was standing within 5 minutes and on my way home within 10 minutes. You will have an anesthesiologist who monitors blood gases, cardiac and respiratory functions. The anesthesiologist is the most important person in the room. You won't get much sleep the night before because of the prep. (It's the worst part of the procedure.) Afterwards, you'll be happy to get home, mask up, and sleep. Admin Note:

RE: colonoscopy with severe sleep apnea?
I had no problems at all during the procedure and woke up quickly.
As long as you let your anesthesiologist know, there should not be a problem.

RE: colonoscopy with severe sleep apnea?
I had one done a couple of months ago and took my cpap. But I talked
to the Dr. because 11 years ago I had had it done before I was diagnosed with sleep apnia. He said that at that time he had used twilight anesthesia and I hadn't shown signs of sleep apnia. But again you arn't all that heavly sedated and you are always on your side which helps too.

RE: colonoscopy with severe sleep apnea?
Thanks to all who answered. It seems that maybe my worries are unfounded. I will be sure and mention it to the anesthesiologist. It's good to know that others have had it with no problems.
RE: colonoscopy with severe sleep apnea?
When I had one done after I was using a CPAP machine I told them I had sleep apnea and the anesthesiologist started me on oxygen before the procedure started and monitored my O2 levels.

RE: colonoscopy with severe sleep apnea?
I agree with what has been said her. Just tell the anesthesiologist. It is unlikely that this procedure will cause any difficulty at all.

RE: colonoscopy with severe sleep apnea?
What did I do wrong, maybe a little relaxed, but I watched the whole procedure on a TV screen... No big deal at all , ok the prep wasn't too fun.
Good luck!

RE: colonoscopy with severe sleep apnea?
Six operations last year. All put me under and no problem. One hospital elected to send me to another as they were not comfortable with my risk.
You will be in good hands... |
