comparisons,
Gidday All,
I am currently a week into trialling with a hired Remstar Auto A-Flex, model 561P, with humidifier and heated hose.
The first couple of nights I tried the supplied F&P ESON nasal mask, but it leaked heaps, and was annoying, so I swapped over to the supplied Swift FX nasal pillow mask.
I found that much better!
I am getting used to the whole idea of using these things, and when I phoned the downloaded results through to the specialist they were pretty chuffed with the readings so far.

A few blokes I have spoken with swear by S9Autoset, and have pretty much convinced me they are the one to get,

so, before I go any further, are there any pitfalls with either machine, any advantages with one over the other regarding reliability, parts, prices, availability etc?
I will be buying ex USA from supplier no.2, unless someone can give me a pretty convincing reason why not.

thanks everyone,

stephen

RE: comparisons,
The S9 Autoset is perhaps the most popular machine used by people on this forum.
I have purchased from the same supplier; and am quite happy with them.

I don't know anything about the Remstar -- so, I cannot give you points of comparison.

I know a bit of Aussie slang -- but what's chuffed?

RE: comparisons,
Sometimes it comes down to apples vs oranges, but in my roughly 20yrs of CPAP, I've never seen nor tried a 'Remstar' unit of any type. Just start watching different threads, and take note of the gear in use by each person to get an idea of what is popular, and what gets suggested over and over again.

"Chuffed" is a new one to me too - my 'guess' is it means happy, thrilled, pleased?

It is one of the many fragments of old English that was dragged into Australia in chains, as a result of your mob kicking the Poms out over a taxation dispute a few years back.

Chuffed = mightily pleased with how something went.

Typically, as with most with Aus/Pom slang, it can also mean the dead opposite at times [but very rarely in this case]

p.s. thanks for your advice about the S9!

The "Remstar" moniker was taken from the hire documents,
full name from the top cover is:
"Philips Respironics REMstar Auto A-Flex, System One,
from the label underneath : REF 561P [model no.?]

Oh, I do know of them, I just have never had any personal knowledge of the brand. In my head (rightly, or wrongly) I see them as a second tier brand, meaning not one of the industry leaders, nor on the cutting edge. I can only think of one possible reason not to choose a Resmed unit, and that is actually a case of personal preference if one happened to need a "ASV" machine.

RE: comparisons,
We have quite a few Aussies on the forum.
It's about 4 AM in Alice Springs -- when they wake up, I know they'll have answers for you.

Wise choice, you cannot go wrong with either machines but S9 AutoSet is my personal choice, not necessary better machine, but I prefer the way data display/report on the screen including unintentional leak oppose to PRS1 report total leak
Both suppliers #2 and #10 ship to Australia, I get my supplies cushions, hose, etc ... from Supplier #10, #2 don,t sell parts separately

Make sure you order the correct machine, machine names can be confusing. You want ResMed S9 AutoSet, not Escape Auto

You can ask for the clinical manual for either machines via Email

S9 setup http://www.apneaboard.com/resmed-s9-cpap-setup

RE: comparisons,
My wife has the S9, and I have the system one. I find the system one to be a tank, It is built solid. The S9 on the other hand seems delicate. Just pushing the hose on the humidifier of the machine caused the connecting pipe to pop inward, and the retaining ring that was supposed to hold it went flying. With the System one, its connection is on top. One can actually hold the pipe and push the hose on with ease. Personally I do not like the S9, from a durability standpoint. I am not concerned about what is on screen. I use software to get all the details. You basically have to chose for yourself, Do you want a color screen on a delicate device, where the ramp feature is in a menu, or do you want a machine that can stand up to years of use, and being knocked off the nightstand by cats without any harm, which has a ramp button you can press anytime, no menu needed, and to get the details you need software. I'll take the tank.
