It is unfortunate but true that many machines are purchased and supplied to people who really need them but just will not use them. In the end I suppose it's part of the "thinning of the herd" process.

Actually we are thinning the herd in Oregon by high altitude spraying.

A few weeks ago I saw an ad for a S9 Autoset so I call the guy up. He says he also has a S9 VPAP Auto for sale, and sure enough there it was listed under VPAP. Who would think to look there?

Anyway, I bought them both the next day just because it was such a good deal. As I was leaving his house with both machines he tells me that he has to call back another potential buyer who was coming in just a half hour. That was close!

Then today I see an ad for a BiPAP Auto and I could tell from the pic that it was a Series 60 PRS1. Wants $150 obo. So of course I have to call. He can't tell me if the model number is 760 because he's not home. We agree to meet tomorrow. A couple hours later he calls me back and tells me it's a 460 and he has another buyer so I let it go.

Man, what a deal that would have been!

My luck ran out, Zonk. But I will keep looking. My wife thinks I'm crazy for doing this.

So far I've spent $900 for the three machines.

Went to P/U my new S9 today from the DME and they 'tried' to tell me the 'Escape Auto' is better than the 'AutoSet' I had asked for. I must have told them 3 times before the APPT - now, they must order it - sometime in a week or so I am told (the medicare process started in mid May) - glad I'm not dying here or something...

This is indeed the saddest thing about sleep medicine in my opinion.

Too many newbies are handed the machine, shown the On button, and then are given so little and so pathetic feedback on how they're really doing along with lots of support in how to make things better. It's no wonder so many give up: They're told this therapy will make them feel better within a week or so, and at the end of that week, most of them are hitting some serious hard sledding. With noone to turn to for any advice other than "Try harder."

Yep. The doctor-egos do have a tendency to get in the way. And all too often when a sleep doc does offer an explanation, they oversimplify things to the point where some important distinctions get lost.

And best to luck goodonya on your on-going adventures in figuring out a way to make this crazy therapy work for you.

Hello, my name is archangle, and I'm a PAPaholic.

I strongly encourage everyone to make a wishlist of what CPAP they want, be it either an upgrade, a backup, or just a somewhat different machine you would like to try. Then watch Craigslist. It may take months, but you may get a really good deal.

Of course, you'll also find the people who want $1500 for their 10 year old Respironics brick machine, too.

Along with people who don't know or lie about what they've got.

If it's midnight and a DME tells you it's dark outside, go and check it yourself.

Don't forget to keep some cash on hand. Good deals come and go fast. Be prepared to drop what you're doing to go get the machine.
