experience with sinusitis?

experience with sinusitis?
hi guys,

i recently got diagnosed with sinusits.  they gave me presecription for steroidal nasal spray flucasone furorate and told me to take claritin antihistamine.

ive been doing that for about two weeks.

i went for follow up with sleep lab and they think my nasal congestion is causing the apap mode on my machine to go too high so they set it to 9cm steady, that seems to be fine so far.  set the humidity higher too.

that said, the nasal spray and antishistamine seem to dry out my sinusus So im thinking of discontinuing them and see how it is.

im curious if anyone on here had experience with sinusitis and how they mitigated it while using cpap?

You really need to track your data on SleepyHead to figure out settings like pressure. See my comment below on humidity settings.

I also take the same the medications and I wouldn't recommend giving them up without first trying to tolerate them by treating the side effect. Turn the humidifier up as high as you can tolerate without getting rain out. Use a heated or at least insulated hose to fight rain out, if necessary. Use a saline spray to hydrate your sinuses. Use the NeilMed sinus rinse kit whenever you have congestion.

If you do find that you must give up the medications try giving up only one at a time.

Consider seeing a ENT specialist for your sinusitis. It may help.

RE: experience with sinusitis?
mattm1,
I recently was given a different corticostearoidal nasal spray for sinusitis (mometasone) which seemed to be working fine until I encountered an unexpected side effect - severe hand tremors that went away when I ceased using the spray. This side effect was known to occur when these medications are used in inhalers but not expected with the nasal spray when used properly (which I had been careful to do). I applied the spray just before going to bed. I also use the P10 mask and I think the air blast caused some of the chemical to move out of my nostrils and enter my air passage acting like an inhaler. Both my GP and pharmacist were reluctant to accept this explanation but offered no alternative.

i switched back from the p10 to the phillips respironics dreamwear.  i found its a bit more comfortable for me.  yah i have the flucasone nasal spray, it works at keeping my sinuses open, but they feel dry and swollen.  ive been taking claritin im trying allegra today.

my sleep clinic turned down my machine settings to a steady 9cm, that was when i finally got relief after  a few days.  apparently my machine in auto mode was responding to nasal congestion by increasing pressure which was bad news. the nasal spray doesnt seem to really resolve the issue, maybe i should ask about a different brand

after a few weeeks at 9cm they turned it up to 10cm and even that small increase seems to have caused the sinus issue to return, so back down to 9 i go!

oh the joys of sleep apnea!

I know it's a basic suggestions so take it for what it's worth but I've great success using a Neti pot nightly before bed. I have really bad seasonal allergies as well and was taking Flonase and Allegra.

Neither helped as much as the Neti pot. I still take the Allegra when we're in allergy high season.

Hope you feel better.

PS: just saw Sleepster made a similar suggestion....always great people will to help!

RE: experience with sinusitis?
I have the seasonal allergies as well as animal allergies. In fact I have been untreated for allergies until I became a CPAP user. I am on the Flonase (fluticasone), however my doctor prescribed Xyzal (levoceterizine). He called it a 3rd generation antihistamine. Has worked wonders for me! My regimen is for fluticasone as needed, and Xyzal 1x at night. Along with singulair, I've escaped my annual trip to the doctor to treat respiratory illness. Hope you get your own solution soon.

If you are finding your sinuses are too dry, it is probably the Clairtin, not the steroid. Try Allegra, possibly even the 60mg 12 hour version.

There is now a lower dose version of Flonase out "Sensimist" if you have issues with steroids.

I cannot take many steroids due to issues with my eyes.
